The Background
Commissioned by Land Rover to celebrate 30 years of Range Rover production, the P38 30th Anniversary Edition models were intended as not only a celebration of the production anniversary, but also as a runout model for the P38 which ceased production during 2001.
Boasting unique Wimbledon Green paintwork with a two-tone green-and-cream interior, the Anniversary models could also be picked out by the body-coloured bumpers (as opposed to the usual rugged black or grey plastic) burr wood veneers and, of course, the not-so-subtle 30th Anniversary badging on the rear and inside of the vehicle.
The History
This particular example is currently for sale with the trade. Specialising in P38’s, the seller states that this is a fantastic example, with the “best condition” interior that they’ve ever seen.
Not only is the interior one of the best they’ve seen, but the extensive expenditure and maintenance in the past is apparently “extremely evident” when out on the road, making this 30th P38 a very attractive proposition indeed.
Prior to being listed for sale by V8 Vault, the vehicle underwent a major pre-sale preparation process which included a new air suspension pump and minor refresh to the plastic trims, among other work which is detailed in the ‘mechanicals’ section below.
The Paperwork
Included with the vehicle is the V5 ownership document showing two prior owners, the Range Rover service book and original user manuals, along with an invoice for the latest major service which was undertaken by V8 Vault.
The Interior
It’s certainly not difficult to see why the vendors enthused about the quality and condition of this interior - it shrugs off its 20 years of use with ease and presents in outstanding order throughout.
The rich leather seats have some minor signs of use as expected from 20-year old leather, though they remain in excellent condition with no rips, tears or marks that we can see, with the contrasting pinstripe detail remaining intact throughout.
The carpets, too, are in excellent shape, while the headliner was replaced with a new item prior to the vehicle being listed for sale. The burr walnut trim is virtually unmarked, and retains a deep gloss shine across the interior.
As you’d expect from a vehicle of this age, there are a few signs of wear-and-tear, though these are extremely minimal. There is a few scuff marks on the lower dash trim around the driver’s footwell along with marks on the inner door sills and around the electric seat controls in the front.
Everything in here works exactly as it should, while the fitment of a new headliner and new air suspension pump should ensure the continued survival of this stunning special-edition P38 for years to come.
The Exterior
On the outside, the Wimbledon Green paintwork looks great, and certainly stands out from the crowd. There are a few wear-and-tear marks such as stone chips to the front end, though this is commensurate with the age and mileage of the vehicle.
Prior to being listed, the plastic trim (mirrors, bumper trims, side trims, etc) were all refreshed and resprayed which took years off of the appearance of this P38.
In addition to the usual smattering of stone chips, there is also a deteriorating rubber on the top of the nearside rear passenger door, scuff on the front upper offside roof section, bubbling to the lower rear offside passenger door window frame, and some marks around the loading hatch on the boot.
All four alloy wheels are in great shape, with no sign of any kerbing or major damage that we can see.
The Mechanicals
This P38 has clearly been maintained well throughout its lifetime, with the vendors stating that the significant expenditure is “extremely evident” whilst behind the wheel on the road, with the Range Rover “floating along” exactly as an air suspension-equipped Range Rover should.
The vehicle has also just received a major service by V8 Vault, along with the fitment of new heater matrix O-rings, a new radiator, fresh spark plugs, a new air suspension pump, and a new battery.
According to the vendor, there are no bumps, squeaks or unusual noises whilst out on the road, and the ride is wonderfully dampened by the adjustable air suspension. All the electrical systems work exactly as they should, and the air-conditioning blows ice cold.
The most recent MOT exam took place on 03 March 2021, and resulted in a first-time pass with advisories for a minor exhaust leak and slight play in both the nearside and offside front anti-roll bar linkages.
The Appeal
The P38 Range Rover is truly into ‘modern classic’ territory now, but if a standard P38 is just a little too common for you, then this rare 30th Anniversary Edition model is just the ticket.
Presenting in very good condition throughout and needing only some minor bodywork TLC, this 4.6-litre P38 is in rude mechanical health ready for the next owner to enjoy to its full extent, both on and off-road.
