2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK230 Kompressor

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Smart, well maintained
  • Hardtop convertible
  • Quirky, rare specification

THE APPEAL

There is quite an extensive choice if you are looking for a two-seater convertible, but which is the right one?

The Mercedes SLK is an excellent choice if you are looking for the ideal cabriolet. Made by Mercedes, you will obviously be getting a well engineered car. It comes with a hard top, meaning it is capable of being used in all weathers and at the touch of a button, will drop down and fold neatly away.

The engine in this particular car is the 2.3 litre supercharged variant which has covered just 81,879 miles, and the interior choice is a rare option colour.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • V5 is present
  • Registered 1st March 2001
  • Original Owner’s manual present
  • Serviced 1,000 miles ago
  • MOT valid until 11th June 2023
The seller purchased this car just 12 months ago and has had some fun in the car, using it mainly at weekends when the time and weather allowed.

Other than that, the car was kept in the seller’s heated and dry garage. However, with just over 1,000 miles covered in the last 12 months, the seller has decided to part company with the Mercedes as he can’t justify the tax and insurance.

The SLK last had an oil change service on the 9th August 2021, which is around 1,000 miles ago, and more recently, it has just been put through an MOT which it passed with ease.

THE INTERIOR

  • Rare option Lotus Yellow trim
  • Well presented
  • Excellent carpets
The first thing you notice about the SLK is the colour of the interior. It was ordered with the rare option of Lotus Yellow and Black leather with walnut trim.
Both seats are in good condition with no damage; there is some minor wear to the driver's bolster in keeping with the age and mileage.

The dashboard shows no damage, and the walnut trim is in good order with no cracking to the lacquered finish. The Lotus Yellow does have some small chips around the ignition switch, which could possibly be touched in.
Sitting in the driver's seat, the wood and leather steering wheel is in good condition with just some slight shining to the leather. The instruments work as they should, with no warning lights displayed when the car is running, and the odometer shows a reading of 81,879 miles.
The carpets are excellent, with no wear to be seen thanks to being protected with a set of factory-fitted mats. Looking up, the headlining of the hard top is nice and clean with no issues to mention.

Inside, the boot is also well presented. The first aid kit is present and lifting the floor reveals the spare wheel, jack and wheel brace.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Brilliant Silver
  • Hardtop convertible
  • Rust prevention to the underside
Finished in Brilliant Silver (744U), the Mercedes presents well. Starting at the front, there are some small chips to the bumper in keeping with the age.

The bonnet looks to align as it should, and the headlights and fog lights are free from any chips or cracks.
Looking down the flanks, there is a slight scuff on the driver's door, which could be reduced with a polish and the doors have an equal gap around them. The wheel arches have had a chrome trim kit fitted, and the seller mentioned that the previous keeper had some corrosion addressed, so the quarters have received some paint.
The hardtop roof works as it should, fully opening and closing with no issues. The car's rear has no marks to point out, and the light clusters are free from splits or cracks.

The five spoke wheels are in good condition, with just the odd spot of age-related corrosion in place, and the tyres have a good amount of tread remaining.

THE MECHANICS

  • 2.3 litre supercharged
  • Low mileage for the year
  • Serviced 1,000 miles ago
  • Eight service stamps
Fitted with the 2.3-litre engine, the Kompressor is a welcomed addition to further improve the performance of the SLK. In addition, the Mercedes has been well maintained, with eight services matching the 81,879 miles, the first seven were at Mercedes-Benz Stoke on Trent .
The car starts as it should with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. It is reported by the seller to pull well through the automatic gearbox and have a smooth gear change with no noises coming from the transmission.

Bringing the car to a halt in a straight line and with no juddering through the pedal, the brakes work as they should, and there is no excessive lip on the discs.
The underside has been treated to help future proof it against any corrosion from setting in.

SUMMARY

What could be nicer than seeing the sun out, jumping in the SLK, pressing the button to remove the roof and off you go. The car has the supercharged 2.3 litre 4-cylinder engine producing 194bhp, so plenty to keep you entertained.
Just in time for the summer, the SLK offers a great deal of fun for a reasonable price making it an attractive two-seater sports car.
