The Appeal
Much like the R107 that preceded it, the R129 SL enjoyed a long production run, thanks to it being such a fine product. Whereas most two-seater convertibles on the market were rudimentary (and often rather fragile) sports cars, the Mercedes-Benz SL was beautifully engineered, solidly built and supremely capable.
To commemorate the end of R129 production, Mercedes commissioned several special edition models, including this ‘Designo Alanite’ SL320 - one of just fifty examples made for the UK market. What makes this example even more special is that there just 30,724 miles on the clock, amassed by a mere two registered keepers.
Impeccably presented throughout and complete with an advisory-free MOT valid until 18th March 2025, this rare and superb SL awaits its next custodian.
The History and Paperwork
- Supplied new in July 2001 by Jacksons Mercedes-Benz on Guernsey
- One registered keeper for the first twelve years of its life
- It was supplied to the second keeper by the same supplying dealer in 2013 - a life-long Mercedes-Benz Enthusiast and collector at 22,600 miles
- In the subsequent years, a mere 9,000 miles have been covered
- The car retains all its original paperwork, including the handbook, service book, copies of the Guernsey logbook, bills and current V5C
- Offered with an MOT valid until 18th March 2025
- There are regular service stamps in the original service book, some 12 in total over the 30,000 miles covered, with some being less than 1000 miles between services. Maintenance carried out predominantly by the supplying main deal, but latterly by specialists
- Such is the condition, the car could be considered as a Concourse entrant
The Condition
- These limited edition SLs were supplied in Alanite Green metallic with Single Tone Java Nappa leather seats on a black interior,
- The very high specification includes special 18'' split-rim alloy wheels, velour mats trimmed in Java leather and electrically adjustable heated seats with memory function
- Due to the care the owners have taken with the car, it looks to be in exceptional condition for its age
- The vendor understands that the paintwork is entirely original
- The finish is superb, with very few blemishes
- The alloy wheels are original and reportedly free from obvious blemishes
- No notable wear is evident to the original upholstery and controls
- The vendor informs us that everything works exactly as it should
- The car retains all its original tools, first aid kit, unused spare tyre and other accessories are present and in fantastic order
- The electric roof is said to operate exactly as designed and we note the fabric to be in very smart condition
The Mechanics
