The Appeal
In 1961, Honda created the class of motorcycle known as ‘Monkey Bikes’ with the Z100, so called because of their diminutive stature originally intended for children to ride at amusement parks. Later Honda developed a road-going version of the Z100, called the CZ100, using the C100 moped’s reliable four-stroke engine with an ultra-short wheelbase and 5” wheels with a lack of suspension. It didn’t take long for the monkey bike to start commanding the attention of collectors around the globe, and Honda was not slow to cash in on the enthusiasts passion for these machines by introducing a succession of limited run models.
This example we have here is a rare and very limited run known as the ‘Baby Tracker’ model, seen in original and unrestored condition, and covering less than only three kilometres from new, it is perhaps the best example on the market of the charming and world-loved Monkey bike. The current owner of the bike has seen it difficult to part ways due to its bonniness, and we can’t say we blame them one bit!
The History and Paperwork
- Originally sold in Japan, where it lived most of its life in dry storage
- Brought over from Japan by TVP Classics during August of 2022 for an avid enthusiast of monkey bikes in Belgium, who has one of the largest collections
- Due to this Baby Tracker being his second one, he made the decision to sell it on in immaculate condition
- The current owner imported it over to the UK and fell in love with it instantly
- The bike has not yet been registered for road use however the relevant documents are present for anyone who wishes to do so, the NOVA process can go forward as normal
- The vehicle has had the VAT already paid with paperwork to confirm
- CMR note is present as well as the invoice from TVP Classics
- No other Baby Trackers available in the UK with this kind of mileage (or should we say, lack of)
The Exterior
- Handsome original paintwork with the ‘Baby Tracker’ colour scheme and fuel tank
- Brightwork throughout remains in excellent condition with no signs of tarnishing or any blemishes
- Front headlamp appears in fantastic condition with no fading or moisture ingress and remains completely functional
- Front shocks and mud guard show no signs of damage to the paintwork, even the fasteners around the headlamp appear excellent
- Fuel tank is in lovely condition with no blemishes, and the original Honda vinyl in place with no peeling or bubbling present
- The frame appears to be in brand new condition as expected with such low mileage, no signs of any corrosion or weak points throughout
- The engine looks fantastic with only very small hints of age on the cylinder head on the polished side (we’re seriously nitpicking here though)
- Z50 Monkey stickers remain in place with no signs of damage
- All of the original Japanese warning stickers and chassis stickers remain present
- Padded seat is in beautiful condition, no signs of any use or wear are to be seen and the brightwork buttons surrounding it retain a lovely finish
- Rear luggage rack is pristine with no tarnishing visible
- Rear lights remain functional with no damage to any of the lenses, and even the securing fasteners are free of corrosion
- Rear shocks and springs are in lovely condition with only some very small hints of age on the chrome springs
- Both front and rear wheels are in great shape with a glossy black finish and shod in Tractor-Grip tyres which have loads of tread, virtually unused
- Exhaust brightwork and heatshield remain beautifully maintained with no pitting or tarnishing present
The Mechanics
- Honda ABO2E 4-stroke 49cc air-cooled engine, reportedly in great health with no known mechanical problems
- 13mm Keihin PAO2E carburetor
- 4-speed transmission with multiple wet clutches for smooth and quick operation, the gearbox is reportedly in excellent health with no grinds or worrying noises present
- 4.5-litre fuel tank
- Brakes remain entirely functional with no unwelcome screeching or grinding noises present
- Suspension is as good as can be on a Monkey bike with short suspension travel
- 6V electrical system appears to be in good working order
