The Appeal
Unlike most 60s cars wearing the Cavallino Rampante, the 250 California wasn’t Enzo’s idea. For that we have to thank the firm’s USA importers like Luigi Chinetti. The result was one of motoring’s most beautiful and evocative cars. And, of course, a Hollywood star.
With only 106 factory 250 Californias built, all priced in the stratosphere, if you want to channel some West Coast 60s cool - or make like Ferris Bueller - then you’ll want this car. There are other fibreglass-based evocations: this is not one of those. It is better - a hand-crafted, fibre-glass coachbuilt car that is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.
Beneath those stylish lines lies the potent and reliable running gear of a 3L BMW Z3, which gives similar performance to the original without the truculent mechanicals. Beautifully finished in Grigio grey metallic with a complementary burgundy roof and interior, this car has covered less than 1,000 kms since its completion in South Africa.
The condition is very impressive and testament to that sparing use. Only a handful of these cars were built - making it rarer than an original - and this one is very impressive. It has recently been serviced and is ready to road register in the UK.
