The Appeal
The Mk4 Golf GTI was a firm reset. After the lacklustre Mk3 version, Volkswagen executed a rethink. The new car was powered by the brilliant 1.8L 20V turbo engine and trimmed to a level of quality entirely new for medium sized cars.
It was also quite unlike earlier GTIs. Volkswagen built its new hot hatch to be quick and pointable but relaxing and comfortable too. This was a GTI you could enjoy on any drive.
The sheer usability of these cars makes this one something of a unicorn. It has covered just over 33,219 miles in its life and remains, thankfully, entirely factory standard. The first of its duo of keepers - who kept it until August 2023 - specified it well in Black Magic Pearl with 12-spoke alloys and an interior trimmed in wood veneer and Recaro sports seats.
The sparing use means that it is in very good order, the exterior and interior showing barely any signs of wear. If hard pressed, you’ll note some creasing to the driver’s seat but that’s about the extent of it. The service history is impressive for such a low mileage car, showing a run of main dealer servicing to 2012 and then regular independent attention. The cambelt and water pump were replaced in July 2022, around 2,000 miles ago. The MOT runs to August 2025 with no advisories.
A superb example of these well-regarded and very usable hot hatches.
