Highlights
- Fastest production road bike when new
- 1300cc DOHC inline 4
- Aftermarket exhaust system
The Appeal
The turn of the century was an exciting and competitive time to be involved in the world of motorcycle manufacture. The gauntlet was thrown down by Honda, whose CBR1100XX Blackbird topped out at 195 mph. It was Suzuki who rose to the challenge, producing the 197 mph GSXR 1300 which is what we have here.
Asserting their dominance, Suzuki dubbed the GSXR the Hayabusa, which is Japanese for peregrine falcon, the bird that preys on the blackbird.
This 2000 example is one of the last original unrestricted GSXRs made before speed limiters were fitted to numerous Japanese bikes.
The History and Paperwork
- Purchased by vendor from main dealer
- MOT until January 2023
- Full independent service history
- 22,800 miles from new
The Exterior
- Corona paint scheme
- Aftermarket exhaust system
- Smart condition
The vendor informs us that this Suzuki still wears its original Corona paint scheme which appears in very good condition, displaying a few stone chips as you would expect of a 22 year-old bike. Commensurate with the low mileage, there is little in the way of wear to any of the bike’s controls and the vendor reports that the bike is carefully stored under blankets in a garage.
The vibrant orange wheels really stand out and the tyres have a good amount of tread remaining.
While there are a few age related marks here and there on this bike, it presents very well overall and appears to be very original. Where the vendor has made changes are with the exhaust system. It now has aftermarket pipes but is supplied with the originals should the next owner want to return the Suzuki to standard.
The Mechanics
- 175 horsepower
- New fork seals and oil
- Starts, runs and rides really well
- Pre-speed limiter
The GSXR impressed critics at the time by being a versatile bike that was docile at low speeds and uncompromisingly rapid at a touch of the throttle.
The GSXR was also renowned for its high quality construction and accordingly, this GSXR continues to perform well. Its 4 cylinder DOHC engine starts at the touch of the button before settling to a sporty burble, enhanced by the aforementioned aftermarket exhaust. The bike rides exactly as Suzuki intended, accelerating eagerly, changing gear readily and braking exactly as it should.
Summary
Few bikes have accrued such legendary status as the GSXR 1300 and this example is particularly healthy.
As one of the last unrestricted Japanese road bikes, this Suzuki should be considered a modern classic that will no doubt be revered for years to come…
