The Appeal

If you want to be able to traverse every hill and ford every river, yet still arrive at your destination in hushed, unruffled comfort, then the Range Rover is the vehicle you need. Just as capable on-road as off, and replete with a host of creature comforts and luxury appointments, it is one of those cars that could easily be described as “the only vehicle you’ll ever need”.
When the P38 was introduced, it was a huge technical leap over its predecessor. With its advanced all wheel drive system, superb engines, electronically controlled air suspension and immensely improved ride comfort and luxury, it won hearts and minds on release and remains immensely popular today.
For anyone that wants a cosseting, luxurious modern classic that just so happens to have the ability to scale the kind of terrain that would make a mountain goat stop and think, then this P38 has to be considered. It comes with a fine service record, a long MOT and a very lovely specification – frankly, we think it’s an absolute charmer.

The History and Paperwork

  • Registered March 2000
  • Supplied new by Wooburn Green Land Rover in Buckinghamshire
  • Six owners from new
  • Current registered owner since February 2019
  • Current MOT expires January 2024
  • Print outs of all MOT certificates since 2006
  • 92,136 miles, verified by the service and MOT records
  • Stamped Land Rover service book: 10 main agent stamps and two independents
  • Serviced in January 2022 at 91,772 miles
  • We’re told that a service by Lewmark Autos will be carried out before sale
  • Leather wallet and owner’s handbooks
  • Range Rover CATS number and codes
  • Two sets of keys

The Interior

  • The cream leather interior is in excellent condition for the age, with just some light wear and creasing to the seats as you’d expect, and it also benefits from smart contrasting red piping
  • Red carpets match the piping and run throughout the cabin, showing in good order with minimal wear and staining to be seen
  • These are complemented with a full set of original Land Rover rubber over-mats to the front and rear
  • Wood veneers adorn the dashboard and door cards and appear to be in nice condition, with no cracking, warping or delamination we could see
  • The cream headlining looks to be intact and undamaged, but we did notice some sagging to the rear
  • We’re told that the dual-zone air conditioning works, as does the central locking, the electric sunroof, all the electric seat controls as well as the electric mirrors and windows
  • We did note that it appears that some of the pixels are missing on the LCD screen for the climate control
  • Factory radio/cassette system with CD changer
  • There is a deep plastic boot protector
  • A full size spare alloy wheels (original Hurricane design) is present and correct, and the tyre appears to have good tread
  • All the tools that originally came with the vehicle are present

The Exterior

  • Finished in gleaming Blenheim Silver – which shows as a very light gold or champagne colour
  • Overall the paint presents very well, with no notable marks, scuffs or damage apparent, just a handful of very minor imperfections
  • From what we can see, the bodywork appears to be in excellent condition with no obvious damage or corrosion and nice, even shut lines and panel gaps
  • The trim wears a smart black finish, and seems to all be present and in good order
  • Privacy glass all round
  • Headlamp wiper system
  • Iconic and practical split rear tailgate design
  • Five-spoke “Hurricane” style 18-inch alloys wear a few marks and light scuffs, but overall appear to be in pretty good shape

The Mechanics

  • 4,556cc naturally aspirated V8
  • Five-speed ZF automatic transmission
  • Electronically controlled air suspension with five modes
  • All-wheel drive system
  • Power assisted steering
  • Anti-lock braking system
  • The vendor assures us that the car runs smoothly and well, with no mechanical problems or issues reported

Summary

With relatively low mileage, a great service history and a long MOT, we think this well-specified and nicely presented P38 would make a very fine addition to any driveway. As a modern classic that could genuinely be used every day, there’s little else that offers the same blend of practicality, ruggedness and effortless luxury.
