The Appeal
While today’s G Wagon customers primarily seek luxury, they were originally prized for their off-road capability. Engineered by Steyr Puch - the best in the business, the Mercedes-Benz G Wagon is arguably yet to be bettered when it comes to off-road ability.
These days, it’s rare to find classic examples that haven’t been given the quilted leather and alloy wheel treatment. That makes this 2000 290 GD a rarity. Its refreshingly utilitarian original specification has been retained and it looks to be in superb shape for its age. The bodywork appears very straight and that lovely tartan cloth upholstery appears to have accrued very little in the way of wear. The digital odometer shows just 167,899 km, which would seem to tally with the G Wagon’s enviable condition. It’s the ideal spec too, with the powerful yet economical 2.9-litre five-cylinder diesel engine mated to a smooth, reliable four-speed automatic gearbox.
If you’re looking for a car that could take you to the ends of the Earth (and back) - this is it.
