The Appeal
While Honda had dominated the Superbike World Championship since its inception, a rule change in 1988 permitting V-twin engines of up to 999 cc played in Ducati’s favour. Honda were slow to react, and while their RC45 did secure victory once more in 1997, it became abundantly clear a new approach was needed.
The RC51 or ‘SP1’ took advantage of the 999 cc V-twin allowance, using that exact formula to take the fight to Ducati, winning the Championship in 2000 and 2002. Here we have a fine roadgoing example of this rare and capable bike, a VTR1000SP1 which has covered a mere 40,390 miles from new in the hands of only two former keepers. For those seeking a superlative example, you’ve come to the right place.
