The Appeal
With a modest power output and a compact body shape, the BMW Z3 Roadster is a car designed to rival the likes of the Mazda MX5 with a more luxurious feel and, with an interior combining wood and blue leather, this example certainly does that.
Although the car presents beautifully on the surface, a few marks lurk in hiding meaning it can either be enjoyed as it is or provide a fun and unimportant project for anyone willing to get their hands dirty.

History and Paperwork
- Plenty of service history, albeit incomplete
- Official BMW Service booklet included in the sale
- Long MoT – until March 2023
The Interior
- Very interesting blue leather and wood specification
- Aftermarket Sony stereo system
- Very good condition
Step inside this BMW Z3 and you’ll be drenched in a sea of contrasting colour with the blue leather seats blending with the vivid wood found on the handbrake lever and centre console. Thanks to this odd specification, the car surely stands out from the crowd. In fact, it definitely fits the bill of a more premium rival to the Mazda MX5.
Within the wood-filled centre console, you’ll spot a Sony stereo system that would have been added in the past. With USB and auxiliary ports, this is one Z3 you can enjoy your own music by connecting your phone.
Throughout the interior, materials look much younger than they truly are thanks to clear love and care. The carpets are in good shape, the seats show few signs of its 20-odd years of use and the buttons still clearly display what they should.

The Exterior
- Beautiful Topaz Blue paint
- A great looking compact convertible
- In very presentable condition on the surface
- Showing signs of age underneath
Outside the car, passers by get to benefit from the great looks of the BMW Z3, a great-looking contender in the small sportscar class. The bodywork is looking very good despite its age; the stunning Topaz Blue paint seems unharmed by 20 years of driving on the open road and the lights show no signs of misting up.
The wheels look like they have never been in contact with kerbs, although the centrepiece BMW logos are slightly scratched. However, it’s closer to the road surface that the car is showing its age a little more. Underneath the car, one can spot a few signs of wear and corrosion has taken a hold to some elements.

The Mechanics
- Throaty inline-six engine good for 190hp linked to auto box
- Several advisories on most recent MoT
- Engine bay would benefit from some TLC
The bonnet of this BMW Z3 is hiding a nifty 2.8-litre straight-six capable of putting out 190hp which certainly fills the tight engine bay.
The power gets sent to the rear wheels through an automatic gearbox. The engine bay itself has seen better days, though a simple scrub down and a bitof care should get it looking tip-top again. Elsewhere, the most recent MoT report does mention a few advisories that mostly are as a result of wear such as slight play in joints and worn bushes.

Summary
With a few areas to work on under the surface, this BMW Z3 makes for a great project car to easily get back to factory condition. In fact, the interior and bodywork already provide a perfect base for such a job. Though, nothing on the car would prevent it from being used quite happily in an immediate timeframe.
