2000 BMW Alpina B10 3.3 Manual (E39)

Highlights

  • Rare manual transmission Alpina
  • 3.3-litre inline-six
  • Just 79,190 miles indicated
  • MOT to 10th January 2024
  • Excellent history

The Appeal

If you like your BMW sports saloon with a dash more luxury and lots of exclusivity, then you get an Alpina. Based on BMW’s E39 5-series, the B10 was available as a V8 with automatic transmission or (much less commonly) as an inline-six with a manual transmission.
Finished in a very attractive specification, this example is in very original condition, not having been modified or upgraded at all. It’s rare to find a manual B10 at all, so to find one with such low mileage and in very good, unmodified condition is really something quite special. If you want something a bit special that’s great to drive but retains a ‘Q-car’ vibe, then we think that this B10 is right on the money.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in February 2000
  • Supplied new by Dick Lovett, complete with the original dealer plates and key fob
  • Five owners from new
  • Current owner since October 2022 and was previously owned by the Vendors partner since 2013
  • We’re told the car has spent most of its life garaged
  • MOT to 10th January 2024
  • Comprehensive maintenance and service history with numerous invoices
  • Complete with the original handbooks and two sets of keys
  • Just 79,190 miles indicated – less than  8,000 miles covered since March 2012

The Interior

  • Grey leather appears to be in good order, with no excessive wear or damage
  • There is some wear evident to the front seats, with some creasing to both and a little more wear to the outer bolsters of the driver’s seat
  • Grey carpets and complementary floor mats look to be in good order
  • The light great headlining seems to be undamaged and shows no staining as far as we can tell, but is sagging in the centre section
  • Electrically adjustable, heated front seats with three-memory function to the driver’s side
  • Electric windows and door mirrors
  • Cruise control
  • Dual zone climate control
  • Radio/cassette system with boot-mounted 6CD changer
  • First aid kit underneath the front passenger seat
  • The material trimming the rear parcel shelf appears to be bubbling up
  • Wood veneer to the door cards and dashboard appears to be in fine fettle, with no cracking, warping or delamination apparent
  • There is a slight droop with the headliner near the sun visors
  • All of the switchgear and controls appear to be in great condition, with no damage we could see
  • The boot shows well, with no significant staining to the carpet, a full-size spare wheel, toolkit and jack
  • We’re told that everything in the cabin works just as it should and that the LCD displays are all in very good order with no dead pixels

The Exterior

  • Smart Blau II Metallic paintwork shows well for its age
  • There are some minor marks and blemishes to the paint, but far less than we’d expect for the car’s age
  • All of the body panels look nice and straight, with no signs of damage, dents or corrosion
  • Badging and trim appears to be present and correct, with no major wear
  • The rear spoiler is a genuine factory-fitted Alpina item, which is quite rare
  • Factory correct 18-inch Alpina multispoke alloy wheels present well, with no kerb damage or lacquer peel we could discern
  • The tyres look as if they may soon require replacing, with cracking to some of the sidewalls
  • Underneath, the car looks to be in good, straight, clean condition with no evidence we could see of notable corrosion or damage other than the usual corrosion to the tank straps

The Mechanics

  • 3.3-litre, naturally aspirated inline-six delivering 275hp to the rear wheels
  • Five speed manual transmission
  • Factory performance figures of 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 162mph
  • Vented discs all round and fully independent suspension
  • New alternator (June 2021), new battery (January 2021), new front and rear springs and bump stops (July 2020), new off-side front brake hose, new front to rear brake pipes both sides, new front brake discs and pads (July 2020)
  • Good maintenance and MOT record

Summary

Offering a sublime blend of comfort, refinement, style and performance, Alpina’s B10 is a truly exceptional sporting saloon. If you love your styling restrained but your car surprisingly capable, then there’s much to recommend this handsome, well cared for E39.
