The Appeal
The idea that racing on Sunday meant sales on Monday got a significant shot in the arm in the 1990s. Britain’s sales people, used to racing up and down the country’s motorways in pursuit of Xerox sales, identified with the likes of James Thompson and John Cleland as they piloted exactly the same cars around winding circuits in the BTCC saloon car series.
Vauxhall, perhaps unexpectedly, was a serious podium contender with the Cavalier and then Vectra saloons. No surprise then that Luton parlayed that success into showrooms with this car, the Super Touring. Just 1,000 were built, based on the SRi and with 2L or 2.5L V6 power. Each car got lowered suspension, traction control, a close ratio box, GSi front bumper, rear wing and a Recaro interior.
Just 1,000 were built, of which only 500 were available in red or black. This is car number 456. It is in great condition, entirely factory correct and clearly enthusiast maintained. Outside and inside, it shows few signs of its age.
There is a thick history file, assembled by its three keepers over 25 years. A long MOT to February with no advisories underlines the condition. This 170bhp saloon is a rare alternative to the better known - and more numerous ST200.
