The Appeal
After an extended period of revising the original, in 1997 Porsche bit the bullet and announced what, for the firm, amounted to a revolution: the first all-new 911 since the 1960s original.
The 996 featured a familiar profile and layout but the engine switched air cooling for a more conventional water-based system. Bigger and faster than the car it replaced, the 996 was just as entertaining and engaging as its predecessors.
For those who wanted to mix press-on motoring with periods of more relaxing progress, there had been automatic 911s before. The 996 stepped things up a gear with the clever ‘Tiptronic’ gearbox that offered full automatic mode or clutchless sequential shifting.
This early 996 combines that gearbox with a well optioned specification and impeccable service history. There are swathes of receipts and invoices going back to the car’s earliest days, all attesting to careful ownership. Add in a long MOT with no advisories and you have a particularly usable and rewarding 911.
