THE APPEAL

The 996 was arguably Porsche bringing the 911 into the modern era.

It was certainly the model that saw them wave goodbye to the old air-cooled engines and familiar stylings of old and say hello to the highly equipped, technologically driven cars they are now known for.
All-wheel drive combined with a 296bhp, 3.4-litre flat-six engine provides the thrilling experience you would expect from a 911. Meanwhile the cabriolet roof provides a dash of extra style and open-air enjoyment.

This Carrera 4 convertible combines a desirable specification with an excellent service and maintenance record, making it an excellent proposition.

PAPERWORK/HISTORY

  • Extensive maintenance record
  • Original handbook and stamped service book
  • MOT to July 2023
  • 83,867 miles confirmed by service/MOT record
  • Last service August 2021 @ 79,946 miles
  • Further 4 receipts for services carried out in 2015, 2017 and 2018 at 64738, 68392,71991 and 72968 miles respectively
Currently residing in a quiet location in Aberdeenshire, this Porsche has covered limited miles each year.

Upon purchase, extensive mechanical works were carried out to ensure correct performance and longevity of the vehicle.
The owner tells us that several invoices from Porsche specialists are present, with some totaling thousands, including one for the IMS and RMS to ensure integrity.

Additionally, the original service book is present and correct, containing numerous stamps by Porsche main dealers and specialists. This is in combination with a large folder full of invoices for servicing and maintenance over the life of the vehicle.

THE INTERIOR

  • Porsche black leather upholstery
  • Electric windows and mirrors
  • Electric heated seats
  • Pioneer sound/navigation system
  • Cruise control
  • Climate control
Inside the 996 black and grey is the theme with seats, carpets and trim all presented in dark hues. The beautiful sports seats are finished in black leather and show only minor wear creases to the driver’s seat. The leather has been professionally conditioned throughout.
It is a typical Porsche inside, with a purposeful yet simple layout. The dark grey carpet adds a little texture to the interior arrangement too, and everything feels very well put together.
All of the instrumentation is clear and well laid out, with the clocks, switchgear and various controls all presenting in very good condition.

We’re assured by the owner that all of the car’s features work as they should, with no issues they are aware of.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Black fabric roof in excellent condition
  • Polar Silver Metallic paintwork
  • Original 18” 5-spoke alloy wheels
Finished in Polar Silver Metallic, this 996 is presented in a desirable and elegant black-over-silver colour scheme.

It’s an excellent choice for a 911, striking yet still subtle. There’s a hint of blue to the Polar Silver Metallic paint, that really pops in the sunshine.
Overall, the paint appears to be in excellent condition, with only very minor blemishes associated with age. There is no corrosion or damage evident, and all of the bodywork appears straight and in superb condition.

Likewise, the external trim elements, including the glass and light lenses, are all complete and in a fine state.
The electrically controlled roof appears almost brand new and operates seamlessly. All four alloys are unscathed, wearing brand new tyres on the rear and good tread on the front.

THE MECHANICS

  • 3.4-litre flat-six
  • All-wheel drive
  • Porsche Tiptronic 5-speed transmission
  • Intermediate shaft (IMS) & Rear main seal (RMS) replaced in 2019
On request the 3.4-litre flat-six fires up with no problems and issues a sporty note. With a healthy 296bhp on tap, there’s more than enough power here - whether you want a sporting drive or an effortless cruise.
With a complete service history and a full MOT, buyers can have confidence that the vehicle is presented in fine mechanical condition. In 2019 the IMS and RMS (known problem areas for the 996) were replaced, offering yet more peace of mind for potential buyers.
In fact, the vendor assures us that the car runs extremely well, feels tight with fantastic handling, a super smooth gearbox and steady temperature readings.

SUMMARY

This is a fine example of an early 996, presented with a great mechanical record and having had thousands spent on preventative maintenance by the current owner. Combine that with the excellent specification and you have a truly desirable and practical sports car.
Built for performance yet able to happily perform as a daily driver, the Carrera 4 provides ample comfort and capability in all conditions and is a superb ownership proposition.
