1999 Land Rover Defender Heritage

Highlights

  • Very rare Heritage model
  • New galvanised chassis
  • Very good condition throughout

The Appeal

Few cars have the world-wide status and reputation of the Land Rover Defender. With a seventy year production run and a reputation as the world's foremost off-road vehicle the Defender is the stuff of legends. The 1999/2000 Heritage edition was a small run of special vehicles following on from the success of the fifty year anniversary editions, with only 270 ever made; they are an extremely rare and desirable version of the classic Defender.
The current owner had planned on keeping this Defender and as such had carried out all of the work needed to bring it up to scratch, including a complete new galvanised chassis. It’s in very good condition for the age and mileage and has clearly been very well looked after throughout its life. It’s a fantastic looking Land Rover, finished in the classic Bronze Green and with the subtle styling upgrades of the Heritage, it’s a Defender that attracts attention wherever it goes.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5 Present and correct
  • MOT to September 2023
  • Invoice dated 2021 that includes a new galvanised chassis, clutch, front shocks, poly bushes, front bumper and water pump amongst other parts

The Interior

  • Good overall condition
  • Lincoln Green leather seats show heavy wear both front and back, but are free from rips and tears
  • Grey carpeting is in good used condition throughout
  • The white backed dial with chrome surrounds present well
  • Headlining presents well
  • Both metal gear knobs are in good condition
  • Stereo fitted, but missing faceplate
  • Door cards, trim and dashboard are all in good overall condition
The interior of this Landrover is that of the Defender we all know and love with some upgrades that are unique to the Heritage edition. With carpeting throughout, white backed dials, metal gear knobs and Lincoln Green leather seats the interior of this heritage edition feels like a big step up over the standard spartan Defender interior of this era.
Whilst showing signs of use, it's clearly been well cared for and certainly presents very well for the mileage. The leather seats whilst presenting with significant wear are comfortable and free from rips and tears that we could see. The white backed dials with chrome surrounds all present very well along with the dashboard and headlining, all of which combines to create a very pleasant interior as far as Defenders go.

The Exterior

  • Finished in Bronze Green with matching wheels
  • Silver grille and door hinges
  • Good overall condition with some minor bubbling visible on the body as shown in the images
  • Nearside front wing mirror housing has damage
  • Tubular side steps with chequer plate tops
  • Rear roof window seals show significant perishing but are still weatherproof
The Land Rover Defender is one of the few truly iconic vehicles, the design is instantly recognisable the world over and remained consistent throughout its long production. The utilitarian go-anywhere looks of the Defender are matched with its performance and  the Heritage edition features some exterior styling unique to the limited edition model that further enhance the rugged look. Silver door hinges, the front grille, the body coloured wheel hubs, body coloured headlamp surrounds, body coloured mirror heads and body coloured wheel arches amongst other things mark out the Heritage edition as something different. This Heritage edition is a Defender that stands out and will get Land Rover enthusiasts talking where it goes.
The car presents well overall for the age and mileage, with some room for improvement as noted above. Regardless of the small imperfections it’s a fantastic looking example of the rare Heritage edition.

The Mechanics

  • Starts easily and idles well
  • MOT to September 2023
  • Superb Land Rover TD5 engine
  • The owner reports that it dries perfectly, accelerating well, shifting smoothly and stopping quickly
  • Glavanised chassis, clutch, new brake lines, front shocks and galvanised turrets, poly buses all round, front bumper and many other smaller components fitted in 2021 with very few miles covered since
  • Engine bay and underside are clean and tidy presenting very well
Even more so than the rest of the vehicle the mechanical aspects of this Defender present very well. With extensive work carried out in 2021 that includes a complete new galvanised chassis it’s in excellent mechanical condition and should give many, many years of service. The underside presents very well and the engine bay is clean and tidy throughout. The TD5 engine is strong and widely regarded as one of, if not the best of the Land Rover engines.

Summary

Everyone loves a Defender, a classic design and unmatched practicality combined to make a fantastic car that's respected the world over. With good examples appreciating steadily the rare Heritage edition offers all of the benefits of a regular Defender whilst also providing a potential investment opportunity. With a long MOT and a full galvanised chassis recently fitted amongst a host of other work, it's in fantastic mechanical condition and ready to drive and enjoy.
