1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ Limited

HIGHLIGHTS

  • 4.0 litre Limited Edition model
  • 80,000 miles from new
  • LPG Conversion
  • MOT until 18th August 2023

THE APPEAL

The Jeep Cherokee XJ series was dubbed the first American compact SUV when it launched all the way back in 1974 and has since gone on to attain cult status. In 1993 the UK was finally able to sample the rugged practicality of the American sport utility 4x4, when it arrived on our shores. It offered Brits the practicality of a family wagon with four wheel drive and a steering wheel on the correct side. This particular 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Limited presents itself as a very nice example of the increasingly rare classic Jeep which is a boxy and tough 4x4.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • First registered August 1999
  • Believed to be a personal import, probably to avoid a waiting list
  • 9 Owners from new
  • MOT history shows just 39,000 miles covered to 2006
  • Overall average of fewer than 3,500 miles per year
  • Current MOT valid until 18th August 2023
  • Vendor reports a great deal of recent expenditure on the vehicle
  • 2 set of keys and 1 key fob
The Jeep Cherokee comes with numerous invoices which document works carried out by previous owners. There is also the 4x4’s V5C document, a Cherokee Handbook and a pack from the LPG system.

THE INTERIOR

  • Grey Leather Interior
  • Airconditioning
The Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Limited was a more upmarket version of the sports utility 4x4, with a decent specification that holds up well today.
Creature comforts such as a leather interior, air-conditioning and the automatic transmission make this a very comfortable 4x4.
Having covered over 80,000 miles, the interior of this Cherokee appears to be in good shape in the photos and looks like it has escaped the wear that most high mile examples would have been put through.
There is some wear on the driver seat which is to be expected, however the rest of the interior looks to be in decent shape. Even the boot area which can get a lot of heavy use looks to be nice and clean. The seller notes that there is no load cover for the boot. He goes on to say that all the electrics work as does the original stereo.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Flame Red paint
The Cherokee’s non metallic Flame Red paint really pops in the photos and has a nice bright shine. The Jeeps decals, side stripes and badges are all present and intact. As the Cherokee is 23 years old, it does have some minor blemishes here and there but it does looks to be in very nice shape. The seller notes it has small car park dents on the passenger front wing but they are hard to see. The left rear cracked light lens which is shown in the photos has now been replaced.
The Jeeps alloy wheels look to be in clean condition with a few marks present and the Bravo A/T tyres have the white lettering that really suits these American 4x4’s. A new passenger side electric window motor has been fitted on 23/08/2022.

THE MECHANICS

  • 4.0 litre straight six
  • Automatic transmission
  • LPG System installed in 2016 with new heavy duty leaf springs
  • Vendor has numerous invoices for all the work carried out on the vehicle
The seller states that the Cherokee drives well with plenty of torque and has benefited from regular maintenance which is evidenced in the supplied invoices.
The LPG conversion was carried out in May 2016 at 62,927 miles at a cost of £3,200. The seller describes the install as very tidy, with the 73 litre tank positioned under the boot rather than inside the boot area. The Jeeps rear leaf springs were also uprated during the LPG install. And the filler for the LPG system was mounted on the tow bar which is shown in the photos.
The seller adds there are invoices on file for new brake lines, a new centre exhaust box with a rear tail pipe and a new prop shaft, and also the vendor has an invoice for rebuilt disk differential and for 3 new tires in 2018. He goes on to say there is a letter in the history file from a previous owner that states that Jeep had a new flywheel and starter motor fitted, plus new front discs and pads. He goes on to say that it had an oil change approximately 100 miles ago and the Jeep was also treated to Schutz rust prevention underseal. The underside does look very clean in the photos. it is noted that there are two key fobs for this vehicle but that one is not working. The Vendor informs us that the A/C is not working at this current time and would need a service or recommissioning.

SUMMARY

This 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Limited presents as a very nice example of the classic American sport utility 4x4. It looks very smart with its bright Flame Red paint and the history file shows it has had money spent in the right places. The addition of the LPG system is a bonus and greatly extends the range of the torquey 4.0 litre straight six. This classic Cherokee is ready to hit the open road with its new owner.
