If you’ve never been in a Bentley of this era, it’s difficult to describe just how fine the appointments are. The material quality is the sort of thing you’d expect to see in Blenheim Palace.
Featuring a traditional four–seat coupé layout, almost every inch of the interior is wrapped in high quality hide or swathed in burr walnut trim. The leather all presents in beautiful condition, the door cards, ribbed headlining and rear seats in particular looking to be in superb condition. There is a little evidence of wear to the front seats, especially the driver’s squab and bolster, but it’s quite minor for the car’s age.
Likewise the burr walnut that adorns the dash, centre console and door caps has been very well preserved, appearing to be near-perfect, with no evidence of cracking, warping or UV damage that we could see. Much the same can be said of the driving controls and switchgear - some items have a small amount of wear and patination from use, but generally everything looks to be in very fine condition.
Running through the cabin, the carpets are thick Spruce coloured wool items, and they look to be in an excellent state of repair, we observed no staining or damage. At the back, the boot area is finished in green carpets with cream contrast edge binding. There is also a full-size spare wheel present.
The Exterior
- Sherwood Green paintwork with gold coachline
- Original alloy wheels
- Smart brightwork and iconic mesh ‘R’ grille
There can be few colours more suited to the Continental R than this deep shade of green. It provides a lovely contrast to the cream interior and is here presented in very good condition. There is the odd minor blemish and mark, of course. But only what you would expect from a 23 year old car that’s been used but very well cared for.
All of the panels and trim elements look to be undamaged, straight and in fine fettle. The brightwork wears a nice lustre, and that eye-catching mesh grille truly sparkles.
The car is riding on its original 17” Bentley alloy wheels, which present in very good condition with just the odd very minor blemish. They’re shod in quality Michelin tyres which look to have excellent tread and be in good order.
Looking underneath the car, the floor pans, sills and valances look to be solid and undamaged, with just a small amount of surface corrosion in a couple of areas - but nothing that would give us pause. Similarly, what we could see of the drivetrain elements and exhaust system all looks to be in fine condition.
The Mechanics
- 6.75-litre turbocharged V8
- 4-speed automatic transmission
- Sport mode
Under that long, stately bonnet, the engine bay presents very well, being clean and showing no evidence of leaks or damage. That mighty V8 produces a not-inconsiderable 386bhp and 750Nm, delivering it all to the rear wheels with a suitably restrained but attractive exhaust note.
With a comprehensive Bentley service history and fine MOT record, we think that buyers can have confidence that this Continental R is in excellent condition mechanically.
Summary
Many manufacturers claim to produce luxury cars, but few do it with such aplomb as Bentley. This example is presented in superb condition, with an excellent history and very attractive specification inside and out. When it comes to luxury performance coupés, we don’t think it gets any better than this.
