The Appeal

The R129 SL. Its name is so familiar with the idea of 'modern classic' that we expect everybody has seen one in the wild - these cars were one of the last of the over-engineered Mercedes-Benz cars, and have gone down rightfully as one of the company's best. That distinguished styling, the sophisticated cabin and the no-nonsense performance all made for an incredibly solid, dependable car. Is it any wonder they're so well-loved?

This particular 1998 example, boasting an Azure Blue livery, wrapping around a Helios Ivory cabin, comes to us in fine order, having been recommissioned only in 2023. It comes complete with a detailed service history, a valid MOT and a recently refurbished set of alloys, shod in new tyres.

It's a fabulous example, and creates a superb prospect for the lucky buyer.

The Condition

All original paintwork, with some stone chips evident on the bonnet, lower sills, etc. (not concourse but looks really good)
Arches are all solid
Some bubbling near the front nearside corner adjacent to the bumper
Minor bubbling on the nearside door
Minor scratches on the bumpers and around the door handles due to use
Both front indicator lenses have been replaced by parts from R129 Company
Alloys have been fully refurbished
New tyres all around
Supplied with hard top and soft top
Soft top in very good order with very clear plastic windows are very clear
Hard top in good overall order
Any broken/worn knobs inside the car have been replaced
Cassette holder in the centre console has been swapped out with a genuine Mercedes console box (original cassette holder included with the sale)
Speaker cover fabric has been replaced (original covers included with the sale)
Some dash bulbs have been replaced
All electrics are reportedly in good working order
Electrical aerial only extends to about 50% of its original range
Front driver's seat bolster shows signs of age
Rest of the Nappa leather interior is in good condition
Half-leather steering wheel and gear-knob show signs of age but have no splits (just patina)

You say the car has been 'Recommissioned last year'. How long was it off the road and for what reason?

The recommissioning took approximately 3 weeks (including the wait for ordered parts and the return of all 4 alloys from the refurbisher). I was in no rush to expedite so did not push for a quicker turn-around. The refurbishment included brakes (pads and discs), hoses, bushes etc. and a full B Service (@ £1,881). NOTE: the listing records the mileage at 97,000 which is not correct (despite my attempt to have them correct it). As is noted in the history thereafter, I have done less than 4,000 miles since the service which was at 96,806 miles, hence the car mileage is actually 100,500.
