1998 Maserati Quattroporte Series IV

Highlights

  • Valid MOT until March 2024
  • Rare 3.2L V8 with manual transmission
  • Solid underside with no meaningful corrosion
  • Private registration included S114 MAL (Shamal)

The Appeal

Introduced at Turin Motor Show in 1994, the fourth generation of the Quattroporte was very much an evolution, rather than a revolution - and that was perhaps its greatest asset. The Gandini bodywork was highly evocative for the relatively plain era of the 90s, with wedged body work, angular rear arches and compact dimensions all making for a very attractive, distinctly sharp-stanced car.
Perhaps the most desirable is the 3.2L V8s, taken from the Shamal grand tourer. To make it even sweeter, this example has the desirable 6-speed manual transmission. Ultimately, it’s an original, highly finished example that’s been regularly serviced, has a fresh MOT and - crucially - all of its period character still on display.

The Exterior

  • Impressive, sporty stance courtesy of Gandini’s angular bodywork

  • Some stone chips to the front bumper, commensurate with age
  • Scuff to the nearside mirror though nothing too substantial
  • Some paintwork has been carried out to the Offside of the vehicle

  • None of these detract from the overall appearance of the car

  • The glasswork and lenses are all sound with no faults we can spot
  • The car is sat on its original Maserati alloys, which are in good order
  • Full set of Michelin tyres, two of which were only fitted in July 2022
  • Underneath, the car is utterly solid with no signs of orange save for surface wear on the exhaust

The Mechanics

  • 6-speed Getrag 266 manual transmission
  • Engine was replaced like-for-like circa 2007
  • Last standard service was in September 2022, at 73,719 miles
  • Last major service (including new cambelt and head caskets) in July 2020 at 73,684 miles
  • Electronic damper adjustment is reportedly not working correctly
  • Engine bay is in good order with the Masterati head proudly on display
  • No reports of any mechanical issues from the vendor
  • The car is reportedly starting, shifting and braking well

Summary

Highly presented, with much of its period features intact, this modern classic is a great example of Maserati’s mastery over aesthetics, performance and style. We’ve no doubt it’ll turn heads on the road!
