1998 Land Rover Rangerover 2.5 Dt Auto

Highlights

  • Ultra low mileage LP Range Rover
  • Low owners
  • Economical 2.5litre BMW M51 diesel engine with automatic gearbox
  • Interior and exterior in superb condition
  • Attractive Coniston Green metallic bodywork with hardwearing cloth interior

The Appeal

The original Range Rover cleverly created a market niche that has expanded exponentially in the 50 years since.  Its 1994 replacement the LP, or P38 as it is often known, cleverly built on those foundations, moving the model upmarket and broadening its appeal.
With so many employed as workhorses, whether on or off road, it is rare to find one like this with very low mileage and few owners.  It has covered less than 27,000 miles in its 25 years, that tiny mileage supported by MOT history back to 2006.  Equipped with the economical BMW diesel engine, it is highly presentable in Coniston Green metallic with a hardwearing cloth interior.
With classic status close by for these desirable Range Rovers, perhaps the biggest decision for the buyer will be whether to use and enjoy it or preserve its remarkable timewarp condition and shine and show it.

The History And Paperwork

  • First registered on 6th August 1998
  • Four owners from new
  • Two keys and fobs
  • Some history including recent service in February 2023
  • MOT history supports low mileage
  • Just 15,000 miles covered since 2006
  • MOT to June 2023 with one advisory for play in the ball joint on the nearside front drag link

The Interior

  • Dark grey cloth interior in very good unmarked condition
  • Switchgear and trim in excellent condition
  • Land Rover protective load cover
  • Very original, right down to the Land Rover factory fitted sound system
  • Door cards each in very good condition
For a vehicle designed to mix workhorse duties with luxury conveyance, the original LP Range Rover delivers both remarkably well.  The interior is neatly designed, functional but cohesive.
The interior on this 1998 Range Rover is in excellent timewarp condition.  The original buyer’s choice of cloth over leather would have been unusual, but gifts this vehicle with a particularly hard-wearing and useable arrangement.  The dak grey seats are in very good condition, with no obvious deterioration or marks.  The only demerit is very minor and easy to miss: there is slight creasing on the side of the driver’s seat base.
Elsewhere the switchgear is in excellent condition, with no obvious scuffs or scratches caused by nails.  The small sections of wood veneer are similarly unmarked.  There is a general sense of originality, such as the original Land Rover sound system.
A Land Rover plastic load cover is fitted to the boot so we were unable to check the carpets in that area.

The Exterior

  • Attractive Coniston Green metallic bodywork in very good condition
  • Front and rear unpainted bumpers appear unmarked
  • Side steps
  • Original three-spoke 16inch alloy wheels in excellent condition
The LP neatly updated the aesthetics of the original Range Rover without ever being anything other than a Range Rover.  The bodywork was all new but the chassis was largely carried over, albeit much strengthened.
This 1998 Range Rover appears to be finished in Coniston Green metallic, a particularly popular colour at the time and one that seems to suit the car’s style.  The paintwork is in very good condition, with no chips or scuffs visible in the photographs, even on the vulnerable door edges.
There is an area of respray on the offside rear quarter: it is not unsightly and the bright daylight of the photographs accentuates it.  But the colour match is not perfect.
The stylish three spoke 16inch alloy wheels are in unmarked condition, with no kerbing immediately visible in the photographs.  They are fitted with quality Goodyear all-terrain tyres.
The underside appears to reflect the bodywork.  The history file confirms what the photographs show, namely that it has recently benefitted from wax oil treatment.

The Mechanics

  • 2.5litre BMW M51 diesel six cylinder engine
  • 4spd ZF automatic gearbox
  • Fluids and filter service in February 2023
  • 2,400 miles since last MOT ion June 2023
  • One advisory on last MOT for ball joint play on nearside front
The second generation Range Rover was available with V8 or 6cylinder diesel power, the latter borrowed from BMW.  The oil burner is a reliable unit that turns the big P38 into a comparatively economical and very useable daily driver.
This Range Rover has that dependable diesel engine combined with the reliable ZF four speed automatic gearbox.  It has covered a miniscule mileage and while there does not appear to be a great deal of history, the photographs suggest that it has been properly cared for, just like the rest of the car.  There is an invoice for a full fluids and filters service in February 2023.  This work also included a general inspection of the vehicle and wax oiling the underside.  The buyer may wish to contact the Seller to find out more.

Summary

The second generation Range Rover is loved by enthusiasts for its sheer capability.  The earliest examples are approaching 30 years old yet this modern classic still walks the line between classic status and very useable daily driver.
This very low mileage, low owner P38 has clearly been cared for.  The bodywork and interior attest to that limited use.  It is also highly original, right down to those pretty three spoke alloys and the factory fitted sound system.  With its economical diesel engine it looks ready for a buyer to exploit those legendary P38 capabilities, or simply enjoy its time warp condition.
