The Appeal

If you think a Land Rover is a tough old thing, have a look at the Defender Wolf. These were Land Rovers that the MoD deemed worthy of putting into action all over the world. But before they saw service they were all toughened up for the job by adding a full roll cage in the front, a rear roll bar, a steering guard and a strengthened rear axle. And this one has come straight from the MoD and possesses all those wonderful extras that make it a tough, go-anywhere military machine that can easily take on a role in civvy street.

The History and Paperwork

  • Prepared by the MoD to include full Remus upgrades
  • MoD Rebuilt 300Tdi engine in 2015
  • Low mileage having only covered 12,181 km
  • Registered for road use in May 2023 and now with a valid V5c document
  • MoT certificate valid until April 2024
  • Original purchase order for the vehicle is present, along with an invoice for the first registration fee

The Interior

  • Utilitarian interior

  • Extra thick heat-resistant and sound-deadening mats fitted in the front cabin
  • Standard Land Rover seating with minimal signs of wear
  • Clear instrumentation with only a few bumps and grazes to the dashboard
  • Rear load area with folding seats and large rubber matting on the floor. Spare wheel side mountings are currently redundant but could be used

The Exterior

  • Forces Olive Drab colour scheme which is in good overall condition but would benefit from a little TLC here and there
  • Standard issue steel wheels with Goodyear G90 tyres fitted all round
  • Pick-Axe and shovel still in situ mounted on the bonnet
  • HM Forces front bumper fitted along with Remus headlamp grilles and snorkel intake
  • Steering guard fitted along with stronger MoD rear axle

  • Spare wheel is mounted on a swing-out arm
  • The PVC soft-top is in good condition but could benefit from a clean

The Mechanics

  • 300Tdi engine which was rebuilt by the MoD in 1015
  • Standard permanent 4-wheel drive system
  • All Wolf vehicles have a strengthened rear axle fitted along with stronger axle internals
  • Fully maintained by the Mod and has an MoT certificate until April 2024

Summary

The Land Rover is quintessentially British, so it’s no surprise that the trusted machines have been utilised by our Forces all over the world. Naturally, the tough little off-roader needed to be toughened up even more to meet the expectations of the MoD and the result was the Land Rover Wolf. An unarmoured machine that was used for patrols and low-risk duties, but never the less it needed to manage long stints in the arduous terrains of Iraq and Afghanistan.

This one has certainly not been overworked as it wears its age well and has collected only a few bumps and scratches. The underneath is very clean and the chassis re-enforcement is clearly visible. Standing on the standard MoD-specified wheels and tyres and finished in the customary olive scheme, the roots of this vehicle are clearly military-based and that’s what makes it such a head-turner. If you know your Land Rovers, then you’ll know that this is something special and a greatly respected bit of government kit.
