The Appeal
The trick when buying a good Defender is to find one in the right spec that looks like it could go anywhere, but hopefully hasn’t. That way you get all the show and the go, without the deterioration.
This 1998 300TDI is an impressive beast. Finished in popular dark blue with black trim and ‘sawtooth’ alloys, it comes with a high specification that carries through from the exterior - we note the snorkel, panoramic rear windows and side steps - to the luxury interior with its leather and suede quilted Corbeau-style sports seats.
With just two keepers from new and low mileage for the year, it remains in very good order. Take away the numberplate and you could easily mistake it for a much younger vehicle. That’s backed up by the MOT, which runs to the end of April with no advisories.
This era of Defender is highly regarded by enthusiasts for its durability. If you’re after a good, practical, six-seat 4x4 to see you through winter and beyond, this one looks rather tempting.
