1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ

Highlights

  • Well specified original example
  • Great mechanical standing with new high capacity water pump
  • 12 month MOT

The Appeal

“One of the 20 greatest cars of all time” certainly not a statement to be used lightly, but these were indeed the words used by motoring journalist Robert Cumberford to describe the legendary Jeep Cherokee XJ.

Praised for its excellent, revolutionary design, and often hailed as one of the best looking SUVs on the roads, the Jeep Cherokee has built itself quite a reputation, and for good reason.
R765 EUF, a 1998 XJ resides in the golden era of XJ production, being one of the first years of the all new facelifted model.

With updated styling tweaks and a greatly improved interior and that legendary AMC driveline, the post 1997 XJs such as this are truly the ones to get your hands on.
A unique sight to see one not modified for off-roading purposes, this particular example presents in marvellous form. A well specified car in great original standing, with excellent paintwork, running gear and interior trim, this Jeep must undoubtedly be one of the best on the market today.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 26/05/1998
  • Accompanied by a comprehensive collection of invoices and service history from throughout the Jeep’s lifetime
  • Jeep owners manual filled with various owners literature
  • Factory service book with regular stamped services
  • Correct V5 registration document present
  • 12 month MOT valid until August 2023

The Interior

  • Well appointed tweed material interior with leather around the base of the seats
  • Highly original condition
  • Cruise control
What really made the Cherokee stand out as an 4x4 upon its introduction was the genuine comfort, usability and luxury found in the cabin.

Whilst Jeep had tried to improve the comfort of their legendary wrangler, they had never fully hit the nail on the head. Cue the Cherokee to come in and change the game.

Comfortable, luxurious and practical, the Cherokee could do it all.
5 deep sumptuous tweed material seats provide a simply blissful ride for the driver and passengers. Tan brown was the colour specified for the interior on this particular Cherokee and my what a choice that was. The seller has indicated that the adjustment switch for the driver's seat can be temperamental at times, but this shouldn't be difficult to remedy.

The near golden interior trim and upholstery really do pop against the dark metallic exterior paint scheme. The various appointments, including the aforementioned seating all present in great standing and, save for some tears to the side of the base of the driver's seat and some sagging to the headlining, have clearly worn their miles well.
At the sides we find four great clean door panels, with smart, high quality upholstery and neat contrasting black door furniture. Being such a high spec example, all four doors hold electric window controls, which are reported to function fully and with ease.
At the front end of the cabin sits a lovely two tone dashboard, the centrepiece of which is a great well kitted centre control panel.

Embellished with excellent, high quality wood veneer, the panel is somewhat rammed with technology and entertainment systems, all of which are reported to be in good functioning order.
Focusing on the rear, one is presented with a neat and smart, carpeted storage area, with a bespoke cargo net and covered spare wheel.

The Exterior

  • Wonderful metallic paintwork
  • Rare “snowflake” style alloy wheels
  • Presents in excellent order
The best of the boxy automobiles. A true marvel of SUV design.

The XJ Cherokee is unquestionably a high ranker in the aesthetics department.

With simple square lines and well defined features the XJ stands out from the crowd, and for good reason. While the design of the XJ remained largely unchanged, post 1997 models such as this were treated to something of a face lift and modernisation, and as such are the far more desirable models to go for.
With a wonderful deep blue metallic paint scheme, the example we have here presents wonderfully.

The paintwork itself is of a great standard and exhibits a wonderful shine, having borne the test of time incredibly well, as such we find very little in the way of wear, patina or blemishing, with just a few marks and imperfections to be seen dotted around the Jeep, most notably a small patch of paint blistering on the front bumper.
The iconic Jeep front end, a marvellous collection of square design is of a brilliant standard and is well complimented by a set of new light lenses.

With this being a higher spec example, at ground level we find ourselves looking at a wonderful set of four “snowflake” style alloy wheels. All four present in good order and help to further set the Jeep off and give it a more lavish appearance.

The Mechanics

  • Glorious 4 litre straight 6 engine
  • New water pump
  • Great mechanical order
  • Long MOT
Now, to the beating heart of this Cherokee, the mighty 6 cylinder powerhouse.

Under the bonnet sits a wonderful engine in the form of AMCs 4 litre straight 6 motor. A quality well maintained example, this mighty 6, fires into life effortlessly, a raughty 6 cylinder tone bellowing from the exhaust system.

With a long MOT stretching into August 2023, prospective buyers can rest assured that what we have here is a Cherokee with solid mechanical underpinnings.
A recent addition to the Cherokee, a new high capacity water pump has been fitted by the current owner.
On the road the Jeep is reported to provide a wonderful drive. Incredibly comfortable, well equipped and with hordes of power on tap, the Cherokee is something of a beast.

Whilst it hasn’t been put to the test on this particular example, plenty of XJ owners will attest to the equally excellent off road capability of the model.

Summary
