1998 Jaguar XK8 V8 Coupe X100

Highlights

  • A genuine 3 owner car with the first two owners cherishing the car for 24 years
  • Finished in the great, period colourway of Topaz Gold Metallic over Ivory leather
  • Likely to offer astounding value for money for a luxury British V8 GT car

The Appeal

The XK8 was announced in March 1996, having undergone an almost unprecedentedly short development period for a, mostly, new car. Some underpinnings were carried over from the XJS, to aid this speedy development. The styling, however, was a significant change from its predecessor with the E-Type’s influence being much more obvious. The big news was the fitment of the all new 4L, 32 valve AJ-V8 engine which proved to be a game changer for this sleek luxury GT.
This example has spent most of its life in the hands of just two long-term owners and has clearly been regularly used and enjoyed. This likely bodes well in terms of the innate quality of this XK8. The colourway is a popular one and the car presents in a highly original condition. There is some room for further improvement, of course, which will likely be reflected in the selling price thus promising to deliver a winning value for money proposition.

The History and Paperwork

  • Unusual for having had just two fastidious owners for most of its life
  • The XK8 was first registered in January 1998 as a UK supplied and specified car
  • The first owner kept the car for 7 years
  • In the first ownership the car covered roughly 45,000 miles
  • The second owner acquired the car in 2005 and kept it until 2022
  • The current owner acquired the car in August 2022
  • At that point the car had covered just under 92,000 miles
  • Paperwork includes the current V5 in the name of the owner
  • The car holds a valid MOT until August 2023
  • An invoice covering a recent air conditioning re-gas and MOT is also included

The Interior

  • The interior is sumptuously appointed in the true Jaguar tradition
  • Upholstery is finished in Ivory leather with accents of walnut veneer
  • The high-backed, tombstone seats are box pleated with double needle stitching
  • The driver’s seat appears to have come unstitched along the junction with its backrest
  • The front seats are fully electrically operated
  • These front seats fold forward to provide access to the rear cabin
  • These seats are of the “very occasional” variety but present in very good condition
  • The woollen carpets are finished in a darker, complimentary shade of brown
  • These are protected by fitted carpet over mats
  • The dash and centre console are equally, luxuriously dressed
  • Stitched and padded leather account for top and bottom dash rolls
  • The top section is finished in a mushroom-coloured hue
  • The bottom in seat matching Ivory
  • The centre panel of the dashboard is finished in gloss varnished walnut veneer
  • A range of white on black main and auxiliary gauges are present
  • The main trio sit behind the original four spoke, leather steering wheel
  • The rim of the wheel is partially finished in wood veneer and the leather is somewhat worn
  • The centre console houses heating and air conditioning controls
  • The original Jaguar cassette / CD / radio head unit is fitted here
  • The door cards are finished in a combination of ivory and mushroom coloured leather
  • These are in a fine condition with walnut veneer finger plates around the window switches

The Exterior

  • The Topaz Gold Metallic paintwork appears to be in a good overall condition
  • It appears to be deep and shiny and appropriately thickly applied
  • A few stone chips and the odd age-related mark were noted
  • The body work presents in excellent order with tight panel gaps in evidence
  • The light lenses appear original and are clear and unmarked front and rear
  • The cabin glass also looks in fine order with no cracks, chips or delamination noted
  • Optional 18-inch Jaguar “Centaur” seven-spoke alloy wheels are present
  • These appear to be in reasonable condition with some chips and marking noted
  • One Jaguar Head centre cap appears to be missing from the offside rear wheel
  • The wheels are fitted with a matching set of quality Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres
  • These are in a 255/45 configuration in line with factory specifications

The Mechanics

  • This XK8 is fitted with the AJ-V8 engine was new at the launch of the XK8
  • This unit is a compact double overhead camshaft engine with 32 valves
  • In this form the engine produced around 290bhp and 290Ib-ft of torque
  • The AJ-V8 engine proved to be a fine engine, making the “Wards Best 10” list in 2000
  • Power is fed to the rear wheels via a 5-speed ZF 5HP24 automatic gearbox
  • In coupe form this gave a 6.7 second 0-60 mph time and top speed of over 150mph
  • Suspension is independent double wishbones with coil springs front anti-roll bar
  • The rear set up is courtesy of multi-link, coil sprung arrangement
  • The under-bonnet presentation appears clean and original
  • The requisite plastic covers are in place negating the visibility of too much detail
  • The inner panels and suspension mounts look to be in good order
  • The underside looks straight and original with no signs of leaks or damage
  • The MOT advises that much underside detail is obscured by underseal and waxoil

Summary

The XK8 is a great looking GT car that seems to have stood the test of time very well indeed. A British success story with power, finesse, and luxury to spare. With the car’s popularity long overshadowed by its predecessors it is now starting to both appreciate and receive the appreciation it richly deserves. Despite that, the XK8 remains one of the true late 1990’s GT car bargains, so deserve your consideration.
This example looks great, and appropriately period, in its Topaz Gold Metallic paintwork and optional 18-inch Centaur wheels combining to make it a head-turning example. The interior is well appointed and equipped if requiring a little additional care and attention. Such a low owner car of this age usually bodes well for the innate quality of a vehicle and as such is likely to represent a sound and exciting ownership prospect.
