The Appeal

Good old Jaguar. The XJ40s’ architecture was so good that finally marrying it to the V8 it was always meant to have plus weaking the looks create one of the firm’s best loved cars, the X308.
Long and low like the very best Big Cat saloons, the XJ8 is both effortlessly quick and supremely comfortable. Quite simply, there is nothing else in the classic world like it.
Here is the proverbial Holy Grail, a very well specified - dark blue over grey - car with the 4litre engine and tiny mileage. It is an early car with one private keeper. It was a Jaguar dealership demonstrator sold to its present keeper with 5,000 miles on the clock by his son, a Jaguar salesman.  has had just one keeper since April 2000. The service history runs to 73,000 miles - it is now on 77,582 miles - and there is a good MOT to October. A reconditioned and warrantied gearbox was fitted in September 2023.

The very good condition reflects the sparing use and single keeper, plus that it has always been garaged.
The X308 makes a sleek and unusual daily driver, but these cars are increasingly being shown at events on the classic circuit. This one would be perfect for the former, but perhaps its ideal home is the latter.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 29th April 1998 making it a very early X308
  • Two registered keepers from new as detailed below
  • Originally registered as a main dealer demonstrator
  • Acquired by the current keeper via his son, a salesman for the dealership
  • One private registered keeper from new
  • Always garaged during private ownership
  • Registered to the current keeper on 27th February 2000
  • Reluctant bereavement sale
  • Original factory handbooks and wallet in good condition
  • Supplying dealer branded road atlas also included
  • Service book with 15 stamps to what appears to be 58,194 miles in 2015
  • Four subsequent services by independent garages to 73,000 miles
  • We are told that the history file includes the invoices for that additional service work
  • Car now showing 77,582 miles
  • MOT to 1st October 2024 with 76,724 miles showing on test and one minor advisory
  • Reconditioned and warrantied gearbox fitted in September 2023

The Condition

  • Very tidy car with well kept paintwork and bodywork showing no obvious issues
  • Described by the seller as 'immaculate and unblemished'
  • Paintwork presents well in dark blue metallic with few signs of age
  • Due to the age and mileage buyers should anticipate some patination to exterior
  • Bodywork appears straight with common X308 check areas presenting well
  • Underside similarly well kept with no structural advisories on current MOT
  • Sits on ‘Sport’ style factory alloys which are very well kept
  • Quality Pirelli tyres fitted showing good tread and conditon all round
  • Interior finished in dove grey leather with barely any signs of age or wear
  • If we’re being picky the driver’s seat shows some slight wear but barely noticeable
  • High specification car with burr walnut veneers, Jaguar radio with multi CD player and air conditioning
  • Interior fittings are very well kept across veneers, switchgear and trim
  • Headlining presents well with only very slight sagging which is typical of this model and easily repaired
  • Spare mat set located in boot

The Mechanics

  • 3,996cc 290bhp AJV8 Jaguar engine
  • 5spd ZF gearbox
  • Reconditioned and warrantied gearbox fitted in September 2023
  • Exhaust catalyser recently replaced
  • Regularly serviced to what appears to be 58,000 miles as shown in photographs
  • Subsequently serviced four times since 2015 to 73,000 miles by independent garages
  • Buyers may wish to check the service history photos to confirm the exact mileage at last service
  • Now showing 77,500 miles so a check over and service may be worth factoring in
  • No reported running or driving issues
  • No mechanical or running gear advisories on current MOT
