The Appeal
During the early 1990s, Porsche’s engineers set themselves the single most significant challenge they'd faced in years. The brief of 'Project 986' was to emulate the appeal of the classic 911 sports car in a package that could be sold for less than half the price: To create a ‘Baby 911’ for the mass sports car market.
It would become the car that saved Porsche and returned the brand to profitability. We know it better as the Boxster – an instant hit when new and very much a modern classic today, especially in the case of the first-generation cars, which now attract the nostalgia to go along with the driver appeal and accessibility they always had.
This one is a very early example – a 1997 first-generation car with the launch-spec 2.5-litre engine and with a host of special-order accessories. In this colour combination, it's not a car for shrinking violets, but as a piece of 1990s retro, it’s very cool indeed.
