The Appeal
Making its debut in 1992, the Golf VR6 was an instant success and set a new benchmark in hot hatch performance. As a result of the increasing size and weight of Golf models over the years, the Mk3 Golf GTI was found to be a little wanting in the performance department, a wrong which was made oh-so-right with the introduction of the 2.8-litre narrow angle V6 VR6 pocket rocket.
Packing 174 BHP and capable of reaching 60 MPH in 7.4 seconds, before storming on to a top speed of 140 MPH, the VR6 offered the highly attractive combination of top drawer performance matched with VW’s refinement and build quality.
Offered here for auction is a stunning low mileage VR6 (only 68,303 miles) with an enviable service history and featuring many desirable options, such as leather interior, heated seats, powered sunroof and Climatronic air conditioning.
The VR6 was the Golf that went after a more exclusive market and in the process created a performance hatchback legend. With low production numbers and a fabulously sonorous 6 cylinder motor delivering considerable punch, the VR6 is now rightly considered by many to be a highly desirable and fast appreciating modern classic.
