The Appeal
Often times, the 993-generation of Porsche 911 is seen as the last true model from the brand. In fact, it is the final iteration of the infamous German sports car to feature an air-cooled engine in the style of the original 901 911.
This particular car’s air-cooled flat-six had a top end rebuild in 2015 and has been rarely used since. This is certainly the perfect opportunity to get in a true 911 as many would describe it in near-perfect health. A sports exhaust and six-speed manual transmission mean this has to be a fantastic driver’s car.
The Targa top roof welcomes plenty of light into the brilliantly upholstered Marble Grey interior making for a lovely place to be whilst the Iris blue exterior paint forms a gorgeous overall specification that will leave passers by gazing uncontrollably.

The Interior
- Original Marble Grey leather upholstery
- Bright interior thanks to the Targa roof
- Very good overall condition
Inside this elegant last-of-the-true-911s sits a bright, airy cabin that opens itself to its environment. In fact, even with the roof up, the Targa top welcomes plenty of light to make the car feel like a conservatory.
Within that conservatory-esque cockpit, one will find an equally bright interior spec. The Marble Grey leather upholstery decorates the hardback sports seats and door cards whilst suede of the same colour provides accents throughout the car. A blue dashtop and steering wheel break up the lighter complexion in a brilliant way.
Throughout the interior, one will spot the odd sign of wear and tear. The gear shift knob in particular would benefit from some light cleaning and the steering wheel is worn in places around the rim. Elsewhere, the owner informs us that the passenger seat’s electric motor is no longer functional and so the seat isn’t adjustable at this time.
The centre console controls also feature some small signs of use in places and a Pioneer MP3 head unit is fitted. The front boot is also nicely upholstered and houses the spare wheel and toolkit.
The Exterior
- Iris Blue paint looks great
- Tyres have covered very few miles
- Porsche Tonbridge impressed by the car’s underside condition
The 993 shape is one take on the 911 philosophy that steps away from the traditional style. In fact, it is a far larger car than its predecessors and the proportions show the car to be taller than its 996 successor. For this design overhaul, it is often considered to be the best version of the 911.
This car, with its welcoming Targa roof and elegant Iris Blue paint makes for an absolute stunner that will surely make any 911 enthusiast happy. Thanks to great care throughout its life, the body is still in seemingly fantastic condition. Whilst some areas may have seen paint touch-ups in the past, the majority of the paint is fully original from the factory.
The car sits on a set of Michelin Pilot Sport tyres that have covered very few miles, despite being fitted just after the current owner purchased the car. They are fitted to a near-spotless set of Speedline wheels that fit perfectly with the 993 shape.
The owner informs us that since around six months ago, the Targa roof has had trouble closing all the way. A specialist managed to resit the roof but it has reportedly not been used since. Roof repair kits are available
Underneath, the car looks very clean with very little corrosion to mention. Furthermore, a full inspection carried out by Porsche Tonbridge revealed the car to be in great condition underneath with no trace of fluid leakage, something that apparently impressed the team.
The Mechanics
- Last of the Air cooled 911 Engine -3.6-litre Varioram flat-six, 280hp
- Engine top end full rebuilt by NineX in 2015
- Great service history
- Drives beautifully according to the owner
Being the final Porsche model to feature an air-cooled, rear-mounted flat-six, the 993 911 is adored by the hardcore community. In fact, it is the most modern 911 to have stuck to its roots.
This particular car’s engine is surely in excellent condition. Not only has it been brilliantly serviced and maintained throughout its life as one can tell from the many service stamps. But it was also subject to a full top end rebuild including new timing chains, belts, piston rings and oil drain tubes.
As a result, the car reportedly starts and runs well and, according to the owner, “drives beautifully.” This is certainly also thanks to the manual six-speed transmission that should provide an authentic and raw driving experience. Furthermore, a sports exhaust should allow the flat-six engine to sing all the way to its 7,000 rpm redline.
The car’s fabulous condition is certainly no better demonstrated than by looking at previous MOT certificates; the past three of which show no advisories. They also indicate that this model has completed 10,000 miles over the past decade.
Summary
There may be a few small electric faults to rectify with this 1996 Porsche 993 Targa. But overall, it is in fantastic visual and mechanical condition. Low mileage in recent years and great care has meant that the car now sits in fully working order.
Now is the time to get on the road with this wonderous piece of Stuttgart’s contemporary history and make the most of its classic characteristics.
