The Background

Jaguar first introduced the XJ40 model back in 1986 to be the saviour of Jaguar. Over the years there were various models and engines to choose from such as 2.9 or 3.6 and buyers could spec it as a XJ6 or the plusher Sovereign.
1994 arrived and at the Paris Motor Show Jaguar launched the new XJ series (X300) which was produced entirely under the new Ford ownership. It was given a design refresh by British car designer and Design Director for Jaguar, Geoff Lawson. The new XJ6, Sovereign and Daimler range were an immediate hit.
The XJ6 came with a new range of heavily revised 3.2 or 4.0-litre engines. The Sovereign was also offered with 3.2 or 4.0-litre power. The Daimler variant came with 4.0-litre known as the Six or, in Daimler Double Six form, the 6.0-litre V12. Long wheelbase derivatives were offered across the range from 1995, the shorter body was available only to special order.

The History

With just 1,330 Daimler Six LWB produced, this particular 1996 Daimler Six 4.0 has been in the seller's possession for approximately four and half years. The seller bought the car for himself as a retirement present to use on weekends and to enjoy holidays in, which he has done plenty of times, cruising around the UK and over to Paris.
So what’s the reason this Daimler is for sale? It is because the seller has downsized and there is simply no room to park the car at the current property due to having allocated parking spaces.
The Daimler does have some evidence of a respray at some point, which was carried out when it was in another owner's possession.

The Paperwork

The V5 is present.
Last serviced on the 20th August 2020, the car has an impressive seventeen service stamps and also various receipts from work carried out by independent garages throughout it’s life.
There are the original owner's handbooks, security system manual and a service wallet present and in good condition. The car also comes with two keys and one alarm key fob. The alarm is the factory Jaguar alarm. The seller has not used it and so is unsure if this works and he says “it would need a new battery in the key fob.”
The Daimler has MOT until 16th August 2021, and is currently taxed until the end of January.

The Interior

The comfy leather electric memory seats and wood trim are what you would expect for a car that cost in the region of £50,000 when new.
Sitting in the driver's seat, you have everything to hand, cruise control, heated seats, air conditioning, cup holder that pops out of the center armrest and a stereo coupled to a Jaguar CD changer mounted in the boot. The seller could not confirm if the CD changer works as he's never used it. There are some signs of wear on the drivers seat bolster and the steering wheel. It was noted that the display for the clock has a fault on the LCD screen.
Electric windows and mirrors work although the driver’s side window is sometimes a little intermittent on going back up.
Just as it’s a pleasure to drive, it’s also a pleasure to be a passenger, especially in the back! There is masses of room with the car being a long wheelbase. Sit back, relax and be driven along in comfort.  The tables on the rear of the front seats drop down and close up correctly.
Inside the boot is the warning triangle mounted to the boot lid, the CD changer, as previously  mentioned, and under the carpet is the spare wheel, jack and battery.

The Exterior

The Six is a massive car, over 5 metes long!
Starting at the front is the fresh new design with the curvaceous design bonnet over the four single headlights. The car is fitted with parking sensors to the front and rear bumpers. There is a scuff on the front nearside arch and the same on the corner of the bumper.
Moving around to the sides, the Daimler’s door shuts and gaps are straight and matching. There is a small scuff on the offside rear door. The electric sunroof works, but there is some lacquer and paint peel on the sunroof and roof of the car. The wheels are original and fitted with 225/60/16 tyres and one of the wheels does have a missing center cap.
Onto the rear of the car and the boot area.  There is a little bit of damage to the boot lid (an unfortunate incident with a gatepost at the previous address) which has unfortunately dented the boot and made it not sit flush. Also, the corner of the rear bumper is slightly damaged.

The Mechanics

Jaguar updated the original AJ6 4.0 litre engine that was used in previous models for the launch of the X300. This new design was called the AJ16 engine. The new design included coil packs, distributor-less ignition, new engine management system, magnesium alloy valve covers, revised pistons and other detail changes.
The 4.0 litre engine eats up the miles cruising along the motorway with ease, and even manages to squeeze about 30mpg on a long journey.  Around town the car drives effortlessly making it a joy to drive through the city streets. The 4-speed automatic gearbox changes smoothly with no nasty noises reported by the seller from either the gearbox or the differential.
Serviced in August this year should mean that you see plenty of trouble free motoring ahead. It was noted that there is a slight oil leak coming from around the rocker cover area.

The Appeal

This is a car you can jump in and drive, either around town or down the motorway and it will deliver. Or you may be looking for a Daimler Six at the right price to carry out some light restoration on?
Yes there are a few small war wounds that have accumulated over the years, but it looks to be a well maintained and honest car.
