The Appeal
Renault had long been masters of the fast hatch back with the concept originating with the Renault 5 Gordini of the early 1980’s. Thanks to its success, especially in the UK, Renault were soon upping the performance ante with the introduction of a 5 Turbo. Inevitably enough, then, the new Renault Clio was guaranteed to get the hot hatch treatment. The pinnacle of the hot Clio lineage arrived in 1993 in the shape of the Clio Williams. Making the most of Renault’s status as engine supplier to the Williams Formula 1 team at the time, the Clio Williams was a homologation special with a limited run of just 3,800 cars. Such was its success that a Series 2 model followed along in 1995.
This Clio Williams 2 is a well-used but well-loved example. It has been in its current ownership since 2008 and is, by the owner’s admission, ready for some additional love and attention. The beauty of this example is clearly its originality. There are a few unseen upgrades but to all intents and purposes this is a stock car with all the special Williams cues and touches that helped make the model such a revered example of French hot hatch dominance in the 1990’s.
The History and Paperwork
