The Appeal

The Porsche 993 was introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the 964 generation of the iconic 911 model and was built until 1998. Regarded by many as the best generation of 911s ever produced, this model was the last to use the air cooled flat six engine that had powered 911s for the previous thirty years. The 993 was offered in a number of guises and specifications during its production life including two and four wheel drive versions, known as Carrera 2 and Carrera 4 respectively.  The 993 was the first generation 911 to have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard and the gear change is still much admired for its precision.
This example is the rarer Carrera 4 all-wheel drive version, with a 3.6 litre flat six matched with a proper manual gearbox for a superb driving experience, plus a convertible top for a pretty much unrivalled combination!

The Interior

  • Marble Grey and Black interior
  • Grey leather bucket seats in great condition
  • Clean light grey carpets protected by Porsche floor mats
The interior has lasted particularly well, especially for a convertible where there is the possibility of damp or UV damage.  The light grey leather seats are in nice condition showing only light wear and no holes or tears.  Even the driver’s side bolster shows just a little rubbing.  The light grey carpets are clean, protected by Porsche fitted floor mats.

The rear seats look unused and there are no scuff marks on the seat backs.  The steering wheel is clean, the leather being undamaged and smooth.  The black dash is in good condition and all the gauges and instruments are clean and appear to function correctly.  Up front the luggage area is clean, with grey carpet which is a bit baggy in places, but they never seem to fit that well.
Overall the interior is very smart and extremely well preserved given the age of the car.

The Exterior

  • Iris Blue paintwork in great condition
  • Black hood erects and stows correctly
  • Porsche 17 inch five spoke alloys in perfect condition with Continental tyres
Iris Blue was a popular 911 colour and looks good combined with the light Marble Grey interior.  The paint has a nice shine and no major damage.  On close inspection we noted a few small stone chips around the front, and one small scratch above the nearside front indicator.  The flanks of the car are undamaged with no door dents.

The wheels are in excellent condition and are free of curb marks or lacquer issues.  We think they may have been refurbished at some stage although there is no invoice on file.

Tyres are Continentals all round, with Sport Contact 2s on the front and Premium Contact 6 on the rear.  The rears are newer, having been replaced in July 2020 when it last received a full service at Jota Engineering.  The Porsche has covered just 465 miles since.
The soft top was replaced in2007, along with a new roof lining.  It erects and stows correctly, fitting well when up and stowing beneath a fitted roof cover.
In general the exterior is in good, presentable condition.  With little requiring attention it is just right for a Porsche that begs to be driven.

The Mechanics

  • 3.6 litre flat six with 6 speed manual gearbox
  • Tidy and corrosion free underside
  • Clean and tidy engine bay beneath working rear spoiler
We drove the Porsche during our visit and are happy to report its drives as it should.  There are no rattles or clunks, and it drives well with plenty of power, endless grip and a great engine note. The engine holds good oil pressure on tick over and no warning lights were showing. Hardly surprising looking through the history; this Porsche has been serviced on average every 2,095 miles!
The engine looks tidy and clean with no visible drips or stains, and the underside is free of damage and any visible areas of corrosion.

Summary

The 993 model is regarded as one of the best of all 911s, and the last with the traditional air cooled flat six. The Carrera 4 was an expensive option when new and so there are fewer still around, especially fitted with a proper 6 speed manual from new rather than a less desirable Tiptronic gearbox. With cabrio drop top as well, this Porsche may be the best combination available.  How much better could it be?
