Background
The Mercedes W124 is renowned for being one of most well-engineered Mercedes of all time, and is famous for its bank-vault build quality and reliability. The styling is also the embodiment of Mercedes from the 1980s and 1990s, and it harks back to an era of understated style with its chiselled lines, classic grille and three-pointed star bonnet ornament.
The convertible variant of the W124 (also known as the A124) was first launched in 1991, and earlier examples were initially labelled as 320CEs, renamed the E320 in 1993. Sought after for their reliability, dependability and build quality, good examples are now scarce.

History
This E320 has had a mere 3 owners and has covered a below average 3,200 miles a year. A 24 valve Sportline edition which meant it was fully loaded with a 3.2 litre V6, 216hp and all the goodies when ordered.
Plus the original owner really pushed the boat out and added a £6,000 factory approved Weissman removable hardtop, so it really lacks for nothing. With an excellent documented history, and a Service book that shows 14 stamps, it is one of the nicest examples we have seen.

The Paperwork
Registered new in August 1995 it was first owned by a gentleman in the Scottish whiskey trade who owned the car until 2012. It subsequently has had only two further owners, both of whom took good care of the Mercedes. The Service book has plenty of stamps, both for full services and lubrication. The most recent stamp is dated 2018 at 84,328 miles and it has only covered 782 miles since.
There is a current MoT valid until January 2022. The Owner's wallet is present with the handbooks, toolkit and a spare set of keys. There is also a Mercedes paint touch up set.

The Interior
The interior is trimmed in sumptuous Mushroom leather throughout; in fact even the removable hardtop has matching leather headlining. A great example of hard wearing Mercedes quality, the interior shows very little in the way of wear. The carpets are clean, the Walnut wood veneer is all as smooth and shiny as the day it was installed. The glossy wood on the steering wheel is clean and shows no cracking.
One fault we did notice was the button that allows the front passenger seat to tilt forward appears to be missing, or perhaps dropped into the seat. Apart from that everything appeared to work correctly, including the electric windows and the hood which stows away neatly. It also features

The interior is dripping with options – An A/C factory upgrade of climate control and electric heated memory front seats, cruise control, cd/radio with Alpine 6 disc changer and Sat Nav. As noted earlier, the first owner ticked every box!
The Exterior
The outside of the Mercedes is remarkably well preserved. The paintwork has a deep shine, with very little in the way of stone chips or marks. The Sportline wheels are all clean and unmarked with no curbing. The front wheels have Pirelli P6000 tyres, and the rears have Pirelli P1 Cinturatos. All four show only light wear with plenty of tread left. The glass is clear and marked throughout, and all lenses are similarly in good condition with no cracks.
The black mohair soft top is in excellent condition and fits well as you would expect on a Mercedes. There is a wind deflector included to help mitigate wind swirling around the cabin and messing up your hair!

Of particular note is the removable hardtop which is a super rare option, we have never seen one on an E class. Painted in matching Blue-Black Metallic it fits well and turns the Mercedes into a really attractive and well-proportioned pillarless coupe. There are a few scratches Inside the roof is beautifully trimmed in matching leather; it’s easy to see why this was a very expensive option in period, and it gives the car true all year round practicality as it even has a heated rear screen.
The Mechanics
With so much servicing, below average mileage, a well-documented history and Mercedes reputation for reliability we think it will be unlikely that it will give any trouble!
Under the bonnet all appears to be in order, with a bit of dust but no tell-tale drips or leaks. The auto gearbox is the desirable five speed version that gives effortless cruising and smooth changes that were barely noticeable during our short drive.
There were no rattles or squeaks, just a nice solid ride as you would expect from one of the most dependable models from the world’s most dependable manufacturer!

The Appeal
Being registered in 1995 the Mercedes would have been N Reg, but the private plate pictured is included in the sale. These chunky and well balanced E class Mercedes are becoming hard to find especially without the galactic mileage that they are capable of covering.
Very few were so highly optioned as this, with the 5 speed auto box, and the added hardtop is just the icing on the cake! Surely this is one not to be missed!
