Rare S4S: one of only 368 produced and just 72 sold new in the UK
Comprehensive history of parts and DIY servicing
Advisory-free MOT valid until June 2025
Numerous upgraded and new mechanical components
The Appeal
To us, the S4S represents a sweet spot in the Esprit back catalogue. As Evo's Jethro Bovingdon neatly summarised, "it was intended to capture some of the Sport 300’s fury but with a bit more luxury" - and that's exactly how the S4S turned out.
They're superb cars to drive, but few get to experience their prowess as the S4S is really rare. Just 368 were ever made, of which a mere 72 were sold to the UK market.
Therefore, we're delighted to present this UK-supplied 1995 example which has been cherished by its current owner since they acquired it in 2003, fulfilling a lifelong dream.
With a detailed history of parts and DIY services, it has been well-maintained. The car has recently undergone significant mechanical upgrades, ensuring it drives as a Lotus should. Its current (advisor-free) MOT is valid until June 2025, providing peace of mind for the next owner.
Whether you're looking for a weekend driver that turns heads or a piece of automotive history, this Esprit S4s is worthy of serious consideration.

The Condition
The original fibreglass body is complete and straight with no notable damage apparent
Optional S300 front rubber air dam fitted
The vendor notes some paintwork defects, including some damage caused by someone attempting to steal the badge
Rear wing paint has bubbled and there's some age-commensurate wear to the paint in various other areas as the photographs illustrate
Headlining has been replaced
Dashboard leather has a couple of small areas of wear
Driver's leather seat has wear and a split in the stitching in the backrest and needs refurbishment while the passenger leather seat remains very smart
Wooded dashboard has some cracked lacquer on the edges near the steering wheel
Replaced ancillary dashboard gauges
Front soft luggage carpeted storage replacing the spare wheel
Brushed finish to the alloy control stalks, indicators, wipers all in good overall condition
Alloy gear stick knob and stainless surround
Stainless door footwell plates
This Esprit looks to be commendably original, and it certainly presents well for its age. As the above list covers, the vendor has provided us with a detailed assessment of its condition - having owned the car for over two decades.
While there's certainly room to improve a few cosmetics, this Lotus can readily be enjoyed as-is. And we'd be tempted to do just that, as the light patina only enhances the car's usability further.
The Mechanics
Engine capacity of 2,174 cc
Manual transmission with 5 gears
No known mechanical faults
We're informed that the car incorporates some non-standard changes where original parts are not available or common replacement parts are recommended by experts
New and recently upgraded parts include:
SJS Alloy fuel tanks and breather pipes were replaced
Stainless catalytic converter
High torque starter motor
PNM LED headlight conversion
Rebuilt radiator, new core and frame
Removed AC pump, radiators, and most pipework for increased radiator airflow and weight reduction
Brake system replaced the Delco Moraine system with an adjustable vacuum assist non-ABS version, braided hoses, drilled EBC discs, and Brembo callipers all around
Braided clutch hose and new master and slave cylinder
Braided oil cooler hoses and replaced oil coolers
Marine charge cooler pump and reservoir
Marine tube fuel sender
Vacuum pump was replaced with a vacuum reservoir for heater controls
The vendor comments that the S4S is very comfortable to drive but can easily be unleashed a with a mere blip of the throttle. The uprated brakes are said to be very good and can be adjusted for vacuum assistance to suit driving styles, while the other sensible modifications are all said to be working well.
We're told it gets the looks and thumbs up from other drivers, making it a great weekend car.
