The Appeal
Revered American boat manufacturer Chris-Craft has been in the marine business since 1874, so it’s fair to say they know a thing or two about making great boats.
This Vision 2000 bowrider is a fantastic all-rounder, providing a comfortable way to explore inland waterways and coastal areas and is powered by a single 4.3-litre V6 engine, providing ample performance on tap.
The History and Paperwork
- Recent carburettor rebuild
- New fuel pump fitted and fuel system reconditioned
- Engine serviced by the vendor
- Previous owner reportedly rebuilt the outdrive although there is no supporting paperwork
- Used this year in the Lake District
The Interior
- Recent retrimming work to some seats
- New amplifier, Bluetooth connectivity and 4 speakers
- Some instrumentation not currently functioning
The vendor informs us that the interior of this boat has received some recent attention. The helm seat has clearly been reupholstered to a good standard, with blue and red piping.
The back-to-back passenger seats on the port side of the cockpit look to be the original items, retaining the embroidered ‘Chris-Craft’ logos and, while they are a little faded, they look to be quite serviceable.
The same goes for the vinyl upholstered white panels which run along the gunwales and the seats in the bow, which have some fading to the piping but are in good overall condition.
There is black carpeting which appears in good order and we were unable to detect any significant wear or damage. The boat has a new amplifier fitted, with Bluetooth connectivity and four speakers around the cockpit.
Looking at the helm itself, the glass fibre dashboard is really smart and houses a variety of original instrumentation. The vendor informs us that while the trim indicator and oil pressure gauges function, the speedometer and tachometer currently do not - which is not uncommon on leisure craft of this vintage.
The steering wheel is a little tired, missing its centre boss and with some aluminium corrosion, it would benefit from some restoration or perhaps replacement. The switchgear for the navigation lights is all in order, as is the throttle lever.
The Exterior
- Sound hull with a few marks here and there
- Trailer (with hydraulic brakes currently disconnected)
The glass fibre hull of this Chris-Craft looks to be in fine order, with no significant damage or any stress cracking to the gel-coat. The vendor points out that the old snubber rubber on the trailer marked and wore into the gel-coat a little on the bow, but this is a rather minor cosmetic detail.
Likewise, there are a few marks on the underside caused by the rollers on the trailer, but we suspect these should polish out quite easily.
The boat sits upon a trailer which the vendor suggests was probably made for the boat as it bears no chassis plate. The boat fits well, towing easily although we are advised that the US specification hydraulic brakes are disconnected, the hoses having perished.
The wheels appear in good order and the vendor tells us that the tyres are in good shape.
The Mechanics
- 4.3-litre OMC Cobra V6
- Recently serviced
- Carb rebuild and new fuel pump
Having used the boat this year in the Lake District, the vendor tells us that the boat performs well, running exactly as it should.
The engine has apparently been serviced recently, with a new fuel pump and a rebuilt carburettor. The previous owner is said to have serviced the outdrive although there is no paperwork to support this claim. The vendor does note that the gimbal bearing is slightly noisy, but the outdrive itself operates as it should, including the hydraulic tilt and trim.
We are also told that the throttle cable will need replacing as it is currently quite stiff to operate.
The leg looks to be in good order and is finished in black. There are a few nicks in the propeller but it is quite usable as is.
Summary
An unusual sight in the UK as they were very expensive when new, Chris-Crafts such as this are a really capable boat.
Presented in very good condition and with some recent expenditure, this example is definitely one to consider in readiness for next year’s boating season.
