The Appeal

A simple switch from ‘R’ to ‘S’ does much to disguise what is different and special about this car. Except from the eagle-eyed enthusiasts, of course. They will spot the red ‘Turbo S’ badges, which show that this is one of only 60 factory 402bhp cars and the most powerful of the long run of SZ Bentleys. Of these, just 29 were RHD examples like this one.
The engine plaque indicates that this is car 52, but Bentley did not build in sequence and it appears to carry the final chassis number for Turbo S models. Classically finished in BRG with cream leather cabin, it retains its Turbo S features and is a very low mileage car.
Beyond the rarity and specification, the history file is hugely impressive. There are 30 service stamps from new, by Bentley main dealers and specialists, up to 74,777 miles when it visited Bentley Glasgow in July 2022. It is now on 76,434 miles.
Over the last six years nearly £45,000 has been invested in the car via Phantom Motor Company. This work covered routine servicing - irrespective of mileage - plus attention to the transmission fluids, fuel pump, washer pump, ECU, brakes and suspension.
The Turbo S is the Holy Grail of SZ enthusiasts and this one must be amongst the best. Whether you’re here for that rarity or the visceral thrill of a 400bhp executive express, this is one not to miss.

  • 11/09/18: £12,744 on servicing and associated work

The Turbo S was a byproduct of the ‘Blackpool project; to build a series of very high performance engines (producing over 500bhp) for the Sultan of Brunei. The knowledge gleaned from this work resulted in the Turbo S. Conceived as a very high performance version of the Turbo R, the S would also help tweak sales at a time when customers were proving in short supply.
The new car got a bigger Garrett turbo plus fuel injection and ECU tweaks to push power over the 400bhp barrier. Heady stuff for a V8 engine conceived in the 1960s. There would be other 400bhp SZ Bentleys but the Turbo S was the most powerful production version.
It was only available for the 1995 model year, with cars built between September 1994 and January 1995. Each car got bespoke badging, ‘B’ inlays in the door midrails, numbered engine plaques, revised sports seats, 17in alloys, higher front bumper, smaller radiator grille and MkIV rear bumpers. 100 cars were planned but only 60 were sold.
The engine plaque states that this is car 52 (of a factory-claimed 75). Bentley did not allocate chassis numbers in order so by chassis number this is car 58 of those 60, first registered in January 1995. The subsequent chassis numbers were Turbo S engines fitted to Turbo Rs, so this car appears to have the final chassis number of the Turbo S models.
The appeal of these cars is unquestionable, but it is the history and maintenance of this one that really sets it apart. The records are extensive and impeccable, including a run of 30 services by main dealers and specialists. It was last serviced by Bentley Glasgow under 2,000 miles ago.
The car has recently been in the care of well regarded specialist Phantom Motor Company (PMC). Since September 2018 there are invoices totalling close to £45,000 and covering almost every area of the car. Highlights include regular servicing irrespective of mileage plus a long list of replacement parts. You can inspect these details in the photographs. We have also included the full independent inspection by PMC conducted in 2018.
