1994 Westfield SEi SPa

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Original SPa SEi press car
  • Genuine low mileage
  • Factory-built example
  • Always garaged

THE APPEAL

Westfield is a car manufacturer with a fascinating history. After Caterham bought the rights to the original Lotus Seven, the Midlands-based company set out building a near-identical replica, but in order to get around ‘passing-off’ legislation its founder, Chris Smith, used different construction techniques, with a fibreglass body, independent rear suspension and a wider chassis – changes that many believe make the Westfield the more engaging of the two cars to drive.
This example is a 1994 SPa SEi model, powered by a 1.6-litre Ford crossflow engine and originally used as Westfield’s own press car and demonstrator, appearing in multiple car magazines in the mid-1990s.
Subsequently owned by the same family until four years ago and then by the vendor since then, the car comes with a known history and a good pedigree. Garaged for at least the past 24 years and used only as a hobby car, it has covered a genuine 17k from new.
Included are the original wheel, as well as a new set of alloys shod with Avon ZT7s that have covered less than 1,500 miles.

SUMMARY

This is a bright and very smart example of the iconic four-cylinder Westfield, as well as being a car with a fascinating history behind it thanks to its launch press car status. It’s a well-maintained example in great overall order and promises to be terrific, simple and reliable fun to drive for its next lucky owner.
