The Background

The Range Rover Classic as its now known, was first released in 1969 and at that time was produced by British Leyland. It was billed as a 4x4 sports utility vehicle that could not only handle a bit of rough and tumble in a muddy field but also allow its passengers to undertake such activities in modest comfort.
The car went from success to success with a number of generations coming of the production line and even when Land Rover took over in 1996 it continued to be a success.
Today, a high end range rover is seen by many as the perfect family vehicle and its even a fashion statement with many celebrities owning and using them.

The History

The current owner purchased this car on 19th May 2012. As a lifelong Land Rover fan and having owned Land Rovers for 50 years plus, he saw it as a perfectly comfortable cruiser that will look after him in the inclement weather and also a collectible classic that he could return to its former glory over a number of years.
Most of the work under his tenure has been carried out by a Land Rover specialist that competes in performance land rovers and knows them really well. This work is recorded in the paperwork.
Unfortunately, a change of health means that the Range now spends most of its time tucked in the garage and that’s not likely to change in the near term so the owner has decided it's time to find it a new loving home.

The Paperwork

The car comes with the V5C, the original leather-bound Owner's Handbook which is in wonderful condition and is complemented by it's security cards and an up-to-date service record booklet.
There is also a folder full of receipts and documents totalling 20K in restoration over the past few years!
Valid MoT to 22.08.2022. There are three keys.

The Interior

When purchased in 2012 , the Original radio was returned to the OEM manufacturer for a full rebuild including a new display screen; and, a new MP3 type connection cable was added.
The carpets are in great condition and are covered by Range Rover rubber mats front and rear; likewise, the leather upholstery is in superb used condition with minimal wear.
Range Rover headlinings have a reputation for sagging so a new fabric headlining was recently fitted.
The rear seats look hardly to have been sat in.

The Exterior

The whole front end has been resprayed in the original Avalon Blue. The remainder is the original, patinated, 27 year old paintwork which, as you can see from the pictures, is in good used condition.
As part of the recent partial restoration the front windscreen was removed and a flange repair section welded in and then a brand new heated screen was professionally fitted. Corrosion of the front windscreen mounting flange is a frequent (and frequently overlooked) affliction of this model of Range Rover which, if not attended to properly, can lead to water leaks and the subsequent deterioration of  the main bulkhead and/or both the dashboard itself and the instruments and/or of the interior trim so it's nice to see that this one has been rectified.
All four tyres are almost new and the spare seems to be unused and even still has the original expanded polystyrene formed packaging holding the jack and the metal chocks etc. At some time in the past, the air suspension has been converted to coil springs.
Full front panels assembly, front footwell repair panels, chassis outriggers, full sill repair including 'A' post bases, inner and outer rear wheel-arch repair panels including seat belt anchor plates have all been added as part of the partial restoration.
The  rear luggage floor was removed and replaced with a new panel including rear cross-member - and internal surface epoxy painted. The lower tailgate has also been replaced. The top tailgate section was replaced with an aluminium framed tailgate and a brand new heated glass screen. Subsequent to this work being completed the underside was then given a professional Waxoyl treatment to protect it for years to come.
Aside from the wonderful work the car has had in terms of the partial restoration and front end rebuild, the paint in general is in solid second hand condition with a number of marks and scratches that are synonymous with a vehicle that’s actually used and enjoyed.
The 3 spoke wheels are in solid condition with some minor corrosion present.
The current owner has a vast file of step by step images taken during the partial restoration which is happy for the new owners to have with the sale.

The Mechanics

The car starts well and drives nicely, the current owner focused on making the car as reliable as possible and within the last year the original engine has been removed, completely stripped-down and checked over all due to a damaged key-way. The bores were honed and new pistons along with a crankshaft were fitted. The remaining mechanical components were also checked over and renovated or replaced as necessary.
The auto box is smooth and the current owner has used this vehicle many times to travel to France and back.

The Appeal

The Classic Range Rover is a car of big stature and even today it is a very capable off road exploration vehicle.
This particular example has now hit classic collector territory and clean examples are becoming hard to come by. The current owner has focused a lot of time money and effort in recent years on restoring items that needed attention and ensuring the vehicle is reliable as possible as he enjoyed using it. This does mean the paint work isn’t entirely restored and despite all the fantastic work under the skin and with the engine , there are still a few marks of character left on the big range.
This however, is not a problem for a car like this as it was built to be used and it suits all the cuts and bruises , it's what it was built for and hopefully someone who wants to use it equally as much will purchase it and enjoy it for years to come.
If your in the market for a solid one of these, this one has had a lot of care and attention from a genuine enthusiast and is worth a consideration.
