1994 Porsche 968 CS Club Sport

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Desirable CS model
  • Extensive service history
  • Original condition

THE APPEAL

The Porsche 968 represented an enhanced version of the 944, incorporating subtle refinements. It debuted in 1991 and had a relatively brief production span of just four years. The updated 968 boasted a modernised front end reminiscent of the 928, characterised by its sleek, pop-up round headlights that conferred a cleaner and more contemporary appearance compared to the 944.

The rear end also underwent a transformation, featuring a neater wrap-around bumper that seamlessly integrated with the quarter panels, while the all-red rear lights gave the 968 a distinctively appealing rear view. The 968 CS (Club Sport) was more driver-focused. It was lighter, firmer, and tighter on the road, bringing an enhanced driving experience to the already fantastic 968.
This 1994 Porsche 968 CS has been a part of the vendor's collection for the past 18 months. Within that time, the car has had some use but not a great deal, which is partially the reason for the sale; the other reason is that a 928 is on the cards. The history that comes with the 968 is nothing short of extensive. Thousands have been spent on the car over the years, all documented in the history file.

THE INTERIOR

  • Half leather and Alcantara comfort seats
  • Electric sunroof
  • Tool kit and sunroof bag
Inside the 968 Club Sport, there is no need for fancy electric goodies such as a radio, electric windows, rear wiper or rear seat; the focus is driving and weight saving. With that said, there are a few exceptions to make your driving experience a little more comfortable, such as the addition of half-leather and Alcantara comfort seats, which are in excellent condition, showing just a few minor creases on the driver's bolster. Both door cards are in good order with no scuffs or damage.
The dashboard in the 968 is free from damage. There is a tiny split around one of the air vents across the top, which is quite common on Porsche dashboards of this age. The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of 117,976 miles. The switchgear is all in good condition with no real signs of age and is said to be working as expected.
The carpets are in good order throughout, with no signs of wear. The rear carpet is all in good condition and fits well. In the boot is the sunroof cover, roller blind, space-saver spare wheel jack and wheel brace, and also rare to see is the Porsche electric tyre inflator and tyre pressure gauge.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Club Sport decals
  • Factory pop-up headlights
  • New tyres
Finished in the original colour of Black (L741), the paintwork on the 968 is believed to be mainly original, apart from one of the bumpers, which the vendor had repainted because of a small scuff. Being black, it's pretty easy to pick up swirl marks, and there are a few which can be seen in bright sunlight, but with that said, these could be removed or reduced by a professional detailer.
Starting at the front of the Porsche, stone chips are minimal, and the indicators are in good condition with no cracks to the lenses. The pop-up headlights operate as they should, going up and down smoothly.
Looking down the sides of the 968, there are no dings or dents, and the doors align with an equal panel gap. The Club Sport decals are in good condition, and the side skirts fit well. A small piece of rubber sealing strip between the side skirt and body has shrunk and come out towards the rear arch. The windows are in good condition with just a few minor age-related marks in keeping with the mileage, and the seals appear in good condition. There is one creature comfort in the way of an electric sunroof which operates correctly.
At the rear, the bumper aligns well and hasn’t distorted where it meets the quarter panel, which is often seen. The red rear lights are in good condition and free from damage. When the vendor purchased the car, the wheels were silver. He has since had these refinished in bright red to match the decals and ensure the Club Sport stands out just like it should. These have been shod in matching Goodyear tyres, which have plenty of tread remaining.

THE MECHANICS

  • 3.0 litre
  • KW Suspension
  • Timing belt replaced at 115,635 miles
  • Six-speed gearbox
Fitted with the fantastic 3.0 litre 16-valve engine, the 968 is a wonderful front-engined trans-axle Porsche with an excellent 50/50 weight distribution. The 968 has been superbly maintained throughout its life, as seen in the paperwork history. The car fires up without hesitation, and the vendor doesn’t report any issues with the running of the car.
The six-speed gearbox has a precise change, and the Porsche pulls strongly through the gears with no untoward noises coming from the transmission. The timing belt and pulleys were replaced at 115,635 miles, and a new clutch was fitted in 2007, which would have been around 87,000 miles.
For the suspension, the car has had the rear axle reindexed to bring down the height a little, which is then complemented by the addition of KW adjustable dampers fitted to the front and rear. The ride on the road is firm, but as you can imagine, the handling is fantastic. Drilled front discs help bring the car to a stop in a straight line with no issues reported, and these look to be in good order with no signs of a lip on the edges.

SUMMARY

It may not have a flat-six in the rear, but front-engine Porsche cars certainly have their place as some of the most well-engineered trans-axle cars produced. The trans-axles give a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, meaning the handling is superb. This 1994 968 is the much more desirable Club Sport that offers a more raw driving experience.
The car comes with an extensive history, which runs into the thousands and would suggest a very well cared for Porsche 968 CS, perfect for anyone looking for that ideal trans-axle Porsche.
