The Background

In the late ‘70s, the big wigs at Porsche decided that their lineup could do with a bit of a shake-up, after what was probably a long, Bratwurst fueled, meeting they decided that they would release a line of front-engined GT cars to replace the legendary 911.

The 928, was launched in 1977 with a large, front mounted V8 producing just under 220hp which would drive the rear wheels to help keep a sporty feeling.

The 928 would be the first production V8 that Porsche would create. Over its 18-year life span, from ’77-’95, it would go through a multitude of changes and updates culminating in this GTS model.

The GTS would get a lot of updates when it came into production in 1992. Featuring a bigger 5.4L engine, updated bodywork, and bigger front brakes it would be the best a 928 could be.

With 350hp on tap and a smooth automatic gearbox it is an animal when you want it to be but the majority of the time it is a perfectly civilised GT car.

The History

Luckily, with all of the service history this car has, we can piece together the majority of its history quite easily. The history of this car starts when it rolls off the Stuttgart production line in 1994 and when it arrives in the UK it is sold to a wallpaper company in Lancashire, a very fancy company car indeed.

After only a couple of years with that first owner, it goes to a couple in Cheshire towards the start of 1996. It appears to move to the Huddersfield area in the middle of 2004 where it would stay for four more services before moving across to an area near to the Porsche Center in Solihull in 2009.

One thing to note is that in around 2009 until only fairly recently, the 928 was an under-appreciated car and the values would reflect this with some of these cars being fairly cheap.

When this happens, it is all too often to find cars skipping services and not receiving the correct level of care, however, this car appears to buck this trend.

Looking at the service book that comes with this car it has always received a yearly service with big works being carried out, when necessary, this all makes for a great driving car.

Carrying on with the owners it would appear to remain in the Worcestershire area up until 2017 when it moves to the roundabout capital of the UK, Milton Keynes. After two years within that location, it moves to the current owner who got it home at the start of the summer in 2021.

Pretty much as soon as they bought the car it was taken to a Porsche specialist where it has recently received just over £7,000 of maintenance work.

This car is now in great running condition and waiting for the next owner to create many happy memories in this rather practical sports GT car.

The Paperwork

With this car comes a lot of paperwork, the majority of this documentation are older MOT certificates mixed in with some invoices for services that have been completed over the past few years. Along with these MOTs and invoices, the all-important V5 is present too.

The best piece of paperwork that comes with this car is the one for the work carried out by the current owner. It is a six-page document, with sixteen sub-titles, that Is incredibly detailed concerning the work that has been completed.

The work starts with a major service, with the cambelt changed along with the tensioner and rollers. After this service work, there is an oil and filter change to the auto gearbox, this is a must for an older automatic gearbox, so it is great to see this has been completed.

After this major service work, a brake fluid change is carried out along with some lights being replaced. Sub-heading number 7 references work completed to the steering track arm, where the offside steering track rod has been replaced, re-tracked and after a road test, the near sidetrack rod was also replaced.

After the track arm was replaced, there was some work to replace a worn camshaft sprocket and some new caps and arms to the distributor cap.

To help with putting the power down to the ground there have been 4 brand new and matching Michelin Pilot Sport 4’s have been fitted, anyone who knows anything about tires will know that these are the ones to have.

As we get towards the end of this document, we can see that the water pump has been replaced and the aircon has been stripped and replaced to make sure it blows cold air. The air-con in the 928 can be somewhat woeful, but after extensive work, it now works in this 928.

The final piece of work that is documented on this invoice is an investigation into why the ABS wasn’t working. After some diagnosis, this issue is now fixed and working perfectly fine.

This invoice has been photographed in its entirety just so a prospective buyer can see the amount of work that has been carried out.

The Interior

The interior of this 928 is in great condition, once you step in it feels like you are stepping back to a time full of huge hair and Motorola brick phones. The mixture of grey leather seats and black plastic accents the interior of this sports GT is an amazing place to sit and watch the miles roll on by.

The leather seats are in great condition showing little to no signs of wear. Although these seats manually go forwards and back, they have some electrical assistance to adjust the seat bases angle.

Along with the full-size front seats, there are two rear seats behind that may just about fit a small adult in them, these seats also fold flat to create a vast boot section big enough for all your luggage.

To match the light grey seats the carpets are finished in a matching colour, with only a few marks on the Porsche stamped mats, the rest of this grey carpet is in great condition too.

One design feature that you will notice within the cabin of this 928 are the huge round switchgear. In a world where new cars are full of screens that are fiddley to use when on the move it is great to find a car that has huge buttons, you will never miss.

Along with these old school buttons, there is an Alpine radio/cassette player along with the toggles for the air-condition, both of these features work well with the radio playing through many speakers.

One of the selling points of the 928 was the big boot section that incorporates the fold flat rear seats. Within this boot, you will find the toolkit, which only has a few small parts missing, and the space saver spare tire.

A great feature within the boot are the two sun visors that will fold down and protect your passenger’s neck from getting sunburnt.

It is clear that the previous owners have looked after the interior of this 928 properly and it now sits today in excellent condition ready for the next owner to enjoy many happy miles in the future.

The Exterior

Finished in Guards Red the exterior of this 928 is both striking and sporty with its wide rear arches it means business. In 1994 Porsche decided to fit a new style of alloy wheels, the Cup II, after a recent refurbishment these wheels are in great condition with even the center caps presenting in great condition.

The inner child within every car enthusiast will be thrilled to hear that the 928 was fitted with pop-up headlights. A key feature to any instant classic, the pop-up lights on this Porsche are in great condition popping up quickly and then subsequently folding away as they should.

Along with the headlights the electrically operated sunroof folds away quickly and retracts back to its original position, vitally it would appear that this sunroof does not leak.

There is only one area of the exterior that could do with some attention. This issue is found at the top of the rear boot lid and looks like some sort of lacquer fade, it is possible that it has been parked somewhere for a long period of time and the light has only been able to hit one spot thus deteriorating only one spot.

The exterior of this beautifully engineered German Bahn-stormer is in great condition and will be a great addition to anyone’s garage.

The Mechanics

With the recent mechanical work that has been carried out to this car, it is no surprise that it is in great condition ready for any road trip you may want to go on.

Fitted with a raucous 5.4L V8 this car has an immense amount of power ready to be unleashed by your right foot. With this V8 mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox, it is a comfortable cruiser capable of devouring miles.

Both of these key components work in perfect harmony making this a great car to live with, with the possibility of it being a daily driver.

On the day of the photoshoot this car performed flawlessly requiring to be started on several occasions, it did this without complaining firing up relatively quickly on demand.

When out on the road this car is simply mega, the engine is incredibly powerful and more importantly, it has a gearbox that can cope with all this power making it a great car to drive.

As was mentioned in the paperwork section this car has always been in for an annual service, with the recent £7,000 worth of work that has been completed to the mechanical aspects of this car the new owner will be inheriting an amazing car.

The Appeal

A 928 needs no introduction, an idea by Porsche that didn’t end as planned, they are now getting rarer to find in good condition. With prices steadily on the increase, this car could be an excellent purchase for any enthusiast.

The bonus of buying a Porsche is the eligibility to join Porsche Club GB, a vast collection of like-minded owners who are always out displaying their cars at many events over the summer so you will never be short of things to do this year.

With the recent mechanical work that has been completed on this car, it is almost like new and ready for the next owner to hop in and travel to their heart's content.
