The Appeal
In the 1990s, when canny company drivers were given a choice, they didn’t pick a base model 1.6 3-Series or a dowdy Audi, they went for a Peugeot 405. Back then, the firm was on a roll, and its mid-size saloon was as entertaining to drive as the Pininfarina looks were stylish.
Most of those fleet buyers had to make do with the 1.9 diesel, but a lucky few ticked the box marked ‘Mi16’ that gave the kind of performance and handling reviewers drool over. In 1994, to celebrate its win that year in the 24 hr race of the same name, Peugeot announced the Le Mans, a limited edition version of the Mi16 with luxury trim.
Just 500 were built, of which only 33 are believed to now exist with just three in roadworthy condition. For enthusiasts of these brilliant 90s saloons, they are the Holy Grail. All of which makes this car a proper treat. With values rising and owners hanging onto their Le Mans cars, this may be the best way into owning one of these modern classics.
This car was last on the road in 2014 and is in need of some TLC. It was acquired by the seller with the intention of restoration so he has amassed a huge collection of useful spares that come with the car. It has a rebuilt engine and retains its plethora of Le Mans features and it is usefully complete. We are told the car starts and runs, but it will need trailered away.
The 405 is one of the 90s’ greatest saloons and the Le Mans amongst its best versions. We can’t wait to see this one rejuvenated by its new keeper.
