  • Excellent history

The Appeal

What better way to start spring than with an enthusiast owned 1994 Mercedes E220 Convertible parked on your driveway, ready and waiting to be taken down the road.

The car has had a new head gasket, full service, and is running like a dream. It comes with a full service history backed up by a mountain of paperwork, including rare and hard to find sales brochures.
The three owner car was purchased new by a husband and wife and cherished for many years. It was then transferred to the wife's name for several years before being sold to a gentleman who completed approximately 500 miles before offering it up for sale in 2018.

This was when the seller purchased it, and since then, he has continued to cherish it just like the original owners. The E220 has been taken to various classic shows and proudly displayed on the Mercedes club stand by the enthusiast seller.

The Interior

  • Cream / Mushroom Leather upholstery
  • Front heated seats
  • Original Head-Unit
  • Original wind deflector
  • Excellent Zebrano wood trim
  • Genuine tool kit
As you open the door of the classy E220 Mercedes, you are faced with an abundance of Mushroom and Cream leather, all of which is in excellent condition. The condition of the leather seats is excellent, other than the smallest amount of wear to the driver’s side bolster and one or two light scratch marks on the rear seat.

A leather specialist could probably be able to touch this in. The carpets have to be seen to be believed. There is a set of genuine Mercedes rubber mats over a set of factory carpet mats that are specific to the cabriolet; these cover the carpet, which is in stunning condition and unmarked. The front seats are heated and work as they should.

The Zebrano wood trim to the dash and centre console is in excellent condition with no signs of any cracking to the lacquered finish. Apart from the outside temperature sensor, everything is reported to be working as it should. The seller has the part for this included.
The boot is well presented and clean, just like the rest of the interior. There is the original first aid kit. The spare wheel, jack, tool kit, and compressor are all present and correct. The original warning triangle is fitted to the boot lid, which is also specific to the cabriolet model.

The Exterior

  • Desirable Almandine Red
  • Original electric operated roof
  • Removable tow bar
  • Rare factory mud flaps
  • 55,287 miles covered
  • Rear parking sensors
Finished in Almandine Red, the Mercedes had some paintwork carried out to freshen it up before the seller purchased it. The paint finish has a deep shine to it with no obvious blemishes that jump out, other than the odd stone chip as you would expect, but these really are few and far between. The headlights are in good order with nice, clear lenses showing no cracks or chips, and the headlight washers are working as they should.
There are no dings or dents to mention looking down the flanks of the E220 other than a small blister on the nearside rear wheel arch. The panels look to align as they should, with a matching gap around them. The window trims and seals are all in excellent condition and are a clear sign that would suggest the car has spent most of its life in dry storage.
The roof is in very good condition with no apparent marks, other than a couple of creases to mention, and one small abrasion mark on the driver's side; it operates as it should when going both up and down.
At the rear, there is a towbar fitted by the dealer Dingle Garages Limited of Llandudno Junction, who supplied the car when new, and this is shown on the original invoice. This has the removable ball located in the boot.

The light lenses are in excellent condition, with no splits or cracks to mention. The Mercedes has had additional parking sensors fitted, which are colour matched to the body and blend in as if they were factory.
The original wheels have been repainted at some point, and now there is some surface corrosion under the paint which has started to show. However, most wheel refurbishers should be capable of tackling this after their initial inspection.

The tyres are all matching Michelin energy and have a good amount of tread remaining.

The Mechanics

  • 2.2-Litre petrol
  • 4-speed automatic
  • New head gasket
  • Recent service
Mercedes have used the 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine for several years in a number of models, one of which is this E220. This particular one has covered just 56,287 miles with a fully stamped service book to back this up.

However, in March this year, the seller noticed some water in the oil when he did his regular oil level check. The car was taken to his specialist mechanic, who diagnosed the head gasket had gone.

Some £2,814.54 later, the cylinder head was skimmed and refitted with a new gasket, spark plugs, oil flush, and two oil changes. So the E220 is now in good health again.
The seller reports the Mercedes changes smoothly through the 4-speed automatic gearbox, and there are no untoward noises from the transmission. In addition, the brakes are said to work as they should, bringing the E220 to a halt in a straight line, with no juddering through the pedal.

Summary

A well presented Mercedes E220 Convertible. The interior is in original and excellent condition, and the car has an amazing history with documented low mileage.
