The Appeal

With a little bit of help from Porsche, Mercedes turned their E Series saloon into a real Autobahn Stormer by using their excellent 5.0 V8 engine to provide plenty of power. it was able to kick out a whopping 322 bhp and was referred to by the press as a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’.
Offered for sale here is one of the last 500 of these super saloons to be built. It has spent time in Japan and Dubai before being imported to the UK when its current owner, a Mercedes enthusiast, snapped it up. And it has been kept it in professional storage ever since.
The striking two-tone leather interior is in great condition and the car’s Sapphire Black  paint gives it a very classy appearance. In all, this E500 is a beautiful example of a long-legged Mercedes, which has an interesting international history and is presented in good all-round condition.

 The Interior

  • Two-tone leather interior — black and green
  • Birdseye Maple veneer trim
  • Two-tone leather steering wheel
  • Cruise control
  • Sunroof
  • Original radio
  • Excellent condition throughout
The ‘Limited’ model’s special edition two-tone leather interior is in very nice overall condition, with striking patterned green central panels flanked by black bolsters. They add a touch of flair to an otherwise standard interior, and the theme is continued onto the steering wheel, with the same green and black leathers.
Birds eye maple veneer adorns the dashboard and centre console and is also present on the door cappings, complementing the switches and dials nicely. The original Mercedes-Benz radio / cassette player is still present and the extensive array of buttons and switches are still clear and bright.
The carpets are protected by rubber overmats and the headlining appears to be in clean condition, but has begun to sag above rear seats. And to the rear, the spacious boot is tidy and features a full size spare wheel and tool kit under the floor.

 The Exterior

  • Sapphire Black paintwork
  • Original Evo-II alloy wheels and Dunlop tyres
  • Very good overall condition
The Sapphire Black paintwork is in great overall condition with only a few small stone chips to mention. It suits this car very well and gives it a slightly menacing look, while remaining smart.
Shut lines and the body all look nice and straight, and the external trim and badges appear to be in good condition. The Evo-II alloy wheels are striking and well-preserved, with minimal evidence of damage. And the Dunlop tyres appear to retain a good amount of tread.
Underneath there is the usual amount of surface corrosion you would expect to see on a car of this age, while on top the car benefits from being fitted with a sliding sunroof, which is in working condition.

 The Mechanics

  • 322 bhp 5-litre V8 engine
  • Very clean engine bay
  • Automatic transmission
At the heart of the 500 E lies its 5.0-litre V8 engine, which has power available by the bucketload. It makes this the perfect car for crossing continents or firing up tight mountain hairpins.
Lifting the bonnet reveals a very clean engine bay and everything appears to be in order. And the accompanying service book shows that the car was last serviced in March 2022, including an oil change, service and new spark plugs.
This 500 E is reported to start and drive very well with everything working and no known issues to report.

Summary

An all-original and rare 500 E Mercedes super saloon with plenty of style, luxury and performance. It comes in the fetching shade of Sapphire Black, with a fabulously styled leather interior.
The five litre V8 makes this Mercedes the ideal car for a long distance road trip, or simply to be enjoyed whenever the fancy takes.
