1994 Landrover Defender 90 300TDi

Highlights

∙Mechanically well maintained
∙Complete brake overhaul front & rear
∙Rugged off-road setup

The Background

Initially released as a 110 model the Defender is an instantly recognizable off-road vehicle with a huge following from modifiers, farmers and off-road enthusiasts across the globe.  In 1984 the Defender 90 that we see here was released and was an instant success with its superb off-road ability and rugged, utilitarian interior that didn’t mind every muddy welly boot in Britain seeing it.
Equipped with low ratio gears, high ground clearance and exceptional wading ability (enhanced on this model with a snorkel) the 90 is widely accepted as being one of the best off-road vehicles money can buy and yet does not look out of place in town or on a country estate.

The History

Purchased by its current owner about 7 years ago it has been used daily by the family. We were assured in its current ownership it has hardly seen more than a muddy track and generally is used for daily needs so has not been put through its paces like some.
Just in the last few weeks it has been treated to 4 new brake calipers along with a full set of discs and pads.
2 years ago the head gasket was replaced and there is paperwork for some significant work.
The vehicle was also treated to a galvanized chassis shortly before its current owner.

The Paperwork

The Defender comes with a current MOT certificate with two advisories (see image), a V5 document stating 4 previous owners and some receipts for some significant work carried out in its current ownership. The current owner maintains most of his own vehicles and so we were not presented with service history. Overall, plenty of proof of work done.

The Interior

Finished primarily in black, the interior is definitely used but still in good order, showing a used life but not abused. The headlining is red suede and this is tightly fitted, clean and tidy.
The central cubby/arm rest is finished in red stitched leather and too shows use but not abuse.
The dash is finished with Raptor Engineering metal plating giving a more than usual rugged finish but has a certain aesthetic appeal most will appreciate. The carpets too have been replaced with a premium finish material, giving the cab a more comfortable feel.
The rear bench seats, while not clean, are in good order and overall the entire interior would benefit from a proper valet and would most likely look quite well from such.

The Exterior

It's a Defender. You'll be hard pushed to find a perfect example and this is not one of them. It had a very ‘used’ patina, and while once painted blue and now gray it has been painted well. There are the usual under paint blemishes from the aluminum construction and typical knocks and dings that are not unusual on a well-used off-road motor.
A ‘Chelsea Truck Co’ spare wheel cover is fitted to the rear which is a nice touch and possibly an expensive extra.
The vehicle sits on black 16’’ wheels fitted to 30mm spacers giving it ‘Stance’. It is to be noted the driver's side front wheel is damaged, and although ‘safe’ from a Mot standpoint, it may be advantageous to source another replacement or have it repaired.
Some good looking red accents behind the black front grille set off the front and this too is adorned with a thick steering guard, giving a complete look.

The Mechanics

Overall the Defender appeared to be in good working order, starting well and running and driving as it should. The brakes have been completely replaced, including rotors, pads and calipers. The chassis and mountings appear solid and while there are areas showing age it is very tidy looking indeed for a 28 year old Defender.
This defender also benefits from an upgraded intercooler, upgraded springs which slightly cover the vehicle and a snorkel for any who might find the occasion to exceed standard wading depths.

The Appeal

Let’s face it, the idea of owning a 4x4 that is hugely capable is something most car enthusiasts can get behind, and this defender is ready to rock, and hopefully not roll across the great British countryside complete with muddy Labradors in the back. One ‘benefit’ you could call it is that it has the used look, and so brushing up against the odd hedge will only add to its character while you smile from ear to ear enjoying the grunty turbocharged diesel power plant.
So where will you take it on its first on, or off-road excursion?
