Highlights
- A practical and honest working example of the venerable Defender 110
- A mere two owner history and a mileage equivalent to 3,900 per year on average
- Ready for immediate workhorse duty or to improve at leisure
- Personal registration number D17 END is also included in the sale
The Appeal
The Defender first happened along in 1983 but started out known as the Land Rover 90 and 110 as designations of their respective wheelbases in inches. The “new” car looked reassuringly similar to the Series III vehicle it superseded. Some important and welcome changes were present under the skin, however. The move to more compliant coil springs, permanent four-wheel drive and a taller, single piece windscreen were amongst the headlines.
This 110, van sided model is the perfect workhorse or utility vehicle for those with an active lifestyle. It is an honest example and certainly no show pony so is up to the rigours of active use. It has a remarkable two owner history and a sensible original mileage for a Land Rover approaching 30 years old. The perfect candidate for either active use or further improvement.
The History & Paperwork
- A UK supplied and specified model first registered in June 1994
- The first owner was Staffordshire County Council on behalf of Staffordshire Police
- The current owner acquired the Land Rover in January 2002
- The owner became the second keeper at this stage
- The Land Rover is thought to have covered around 65,000 miles at that point
- In the last 10 years the Land Rover has been lightly used
- Only around 6,000 miles have been covered in that period
- The Land Rover is complete with its current V5 registration document
- An early copy is also on hand
- The 110 holds a current MOT which is valid until August 2024
- MOT history back to 2006 is available via the Government portal
- A Haynes Workshop Manual for this model is also included
The Condition
- The 110 presents in a well-used but seemingly robust condition
- It is presented in familiar Coniston Green with Limestone roof and wheels
- In true Land Rover fashion, the odd nick and nudge is noted to the bodywork
- For a utility vehicle approaching 30 years old, however, this is moderate
- The paintwork exhibits some surface corrosion in places
- The familiar Birmabright reaction has broken the paint’s surface in places
- This is most evident around the rear door
- Useful, fold down Land Rover side steps are fitted
- Some discolouring is noted to the roof panel
- This looks as if it may be rectified with a cut and polish
- The steel wheels sit beneath the familiar plastic arch extensions
- These 16-inch items have been overpainted at some point
- Some surface rust discolouration is evident
- A mixed set of off-road tyres are fitted
- The cabin presents in a similar, overall condition
- The vinyl seats are finished in black with an occasional seat in the centre
- The vinyl to the driver’s seat has split in several places
- The remainder of the cab is usual Defender fare and appears to be compete
- The rear cabin is fitted with a pair of fold down bench seats
- This area’s condition is commensurate with the rest of the Land Rover
The Mechanics
- This era of 110 was fitted with the 2.5L Turbodiesel 11L engine
- A well respected until capable of 300,000 miles plus with regular maintenance
- Originally rated at 109bhp in the Defender with 188Ib-ft of torque
- Power is routed to all four wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox
- The expected low / high transfer box is present together with locking diffs
- The engine bay presents in an original condition
- The expected data plate is present, and the inner panels appear robust
- The underside looks in keeping with the 110’s age and mileage
- No obvious issues or concerns are noted or reported
- The long, current MOT bodes well for mechanical condition
