The Appeal

The scene is a meeting room at Land Rover HQ. The topic: what to call the Defender variant that the firm was specially developing for its exacting MOD customer. “This project could really bite us on the a**se,” quipped the firm’s Engineering Director. “Better call it Wolf then”, came the reply.
And so, the story goes, one of the best-regarded Defender models got its informal name. You can understand the Director’s comment when you consider what the team had to achieve. The MOD set sky-high standards and extensive, prolonged testing resulted in a stronger chassis, reinforced rear axle and many other detail changes.
This 1994 110 Wolf - the official nomenclature is Truck Utility Medium High Specification, or TUM HS for short - helped make all that possible. It is one of a handful of remaining ‘trial’ vehicles - some sources indicate only three exist - that were used to test and test and test the Defender for the MOD. The vendor acquired the vehicle in 2023, realised the early chassis number and executed a Freedom of Information request, which verifies these details. He tells us that this one still has some sand inside from this time.
It was bought from Witham Specialist Vehicles, the well-known MOD vehicle reseller. All MOD vehicles are impeccably maintained and this one has covered few km since purchase. It has been used for light farm work and is only for sale as the vendor believes it should be looked after in line with its historical importance. It is sold with a long MOT to September 2025.
Whether you choose to put this Wolf to work or treat it to a sparing life, if you’re a Land Rover enthusiast or military collector, it is an opportunity not to miss.
