The Appeal

Back when Citroën was interesting, we got cars like the XM.

Bestowed with the French firm’s legendary Hydropneumatic suspension system which now featured a rather clever active electronic management system, the XM was one of, if not the best riding cars of its era. The space-age styling was typical of Citroën’s saloon offerings ever since the launch of the DS in 1955. It would go on to win European Car of the Year in 1990 when it received nearly twice the votes the runner up - the all-new Mercedes-Benz R129 SL.

This 1994 XM SX is vanishingly rare; one of just five examples currently licensed in the UK according to How Many Left. It has a mere 40,251 miles on the six-figure odometer which is supported by the known history and understood to be accurate. Moreover, it’s as original as you could possibly wish for, down to the smallest details like the original UK dealer number plates, window stickers, Citroën tow bar cover and book pack. At MOT in April this year, the Citroën accrued just the one advisory for tyres - so no mechanical issues or excessive corrosion to report whatsoever.

The Condition

Desirable sunroof model
Original dealer plates and window sticker
Superb silver paintwork with very few visible imperfections
Arrow-straight bodywork with well-fitting floors all-round
Three of the four OEM alloy wheels appear free from any kerb damage - slight scuffs to the nearside front
The plastic exterior trim exhibits a few scuffs as shown in the photographs, but these do not detract from the car’s overall smart appearance
No issues with corrosion were identified during MOT testing and all that’s visible underneath is some light age-commensurate surface rust
Equipped with a tow bar, complete with period Citroën branded rubber cover
Superb original cloth upholstery, free from heavy wear in line with the ultra-low mileage
The original switches and controls appear similarly wear-free for a car of this age
Slight chip evident to the top of the gear selector
The headlining appears well-supported, with no evidence of leaks from the aforementioned sunroof
Retains its original Citroën/Dolby cassette unit however this is not currently working

The Mechanics

2.0-litre 16-valve four-cylinder petrol engine
Five-speed manual gearbox
Recent new timing belt (with the last few hundred miles)
Matching set of Pirelli P600 tyres (showing slight perishing to sidewalls as per MOT)
Highly original engine bay
Used very sparingly - the MOT history indicated that the car was off the road from 2016/17 until early this year
