The Appeal

Trust Alfa Romeo to do different. The RZ ‘Roadster Zagato’ mixed cutting edge styling and lightweight fibreglass construction with proven mechanicals from the 75.
And what mechanicals. The transaxle layout delivered near perfect weight distribution while the V6 ‘Busso’ engine provided a truly sonorous and characterful driving experience. The boxy bodywork was designed without concern for convention by Alfa Romeo’s own in-house design team and each car was hand-assembled by Zagato (hence the name).
Only 278 RZs were built and this is car number 258. It is one of the very last, likely built amongst the final 32 cars produced while Zagato was in receivership. Its Nero 601 black finish cleverly understates what is still, 30 years after it left the factory, an arresting design quite unlike anything else on the road. The interior is beautifully trimmed in acres of red leather.
Inside and out this low mileage car presents very well. It began life in Germany but arrived in Czechia in 2017 and has been with the same keeper since. The vendor reports that it is in very good condition and, as you can see in the photographs, he has been enjoying a car that will doubtless be an absolute treat for the buyer.

The Nero Black of this car was a rare choice for first owners of these distinctive models, yet it is a finish that neatly underplays the bold lines of the RZ. Despite the visual similarity to the SZ, virtually every panel is different, carefully formed by Zagato from high performance composite fibreglass materials.
The bodywork of this car is very well kept, the paintwork similarly impressive. There are some minor stone chips to note, but these hint at the car’s originality. It sits on factory correct ‘pepperpot’ split rim bolted alloys with a mix of quality Pirelli and Vredestein tyres. The vendor reports that the chassis would benefit from attention but the car is otherwise in great order.
The interior is a real treat for the eyes, sumptuously trimmed as it is in acres of high quality burgundy leather. The material swathes the dashboard and centre console as well as the seats. White Veglia dials peep out inbetween. The cabin of this very low mileage car is well preserved and shows few signs of use and age.

The Mechanics

  • 210bhp ‘Busso’ 3litre V6 engine
  • 5spd manual gearbox
  • Transaxle running gear from Alfa Romeo 75
  • 0-60mph in 7.5secs
  • Vendor reports that it drives, stops and shifts well and without issue
Beneath the avant garde bodywork lies the heart of a classic Alfa Romeo - namely the firm’s 75. This car was the last of the revered ‘transaxle’ Alfas whose advanced saloon layout delivered near-perfect weight distribution.
This feature is carried over to the RZ, together with the 75’s brilliant 3litre V6 engine. Nicknamed the Busso after its Ferrari engineer designer, this engine is one of Italian motoring if not world motoring’s true greats, a sweet-revving unit with a glorious soundtrack. It is reason alone to want a RZ.
This car has been sparingly used over its 30 years, clocking up just 83,000 kms. We are told that it runs and drives very well with no issues for the buyer to pick up.
