Highlights
- Ultra rare Q4 specification featuring a turbocharged engine and AWD
- Restored, with numerous performance parts including a ‘stage 3’ turbo
- Often seen at the Retro Rides Gathering and the Nurburgring
The Appeal
Built upon Fiat’s type 3 platform, the Alfa Romeo 155 replaced the 75 when it entered production in 1992. In 1994, the 155 gained notoriety after Gabriele Tarquini piloted one to victory in the British Touring Car Championship.
Most 155s were front wheel drive, but not this one…
A select few 155s were equipped with a turbocharged 2-litre engine and an all-wheel drive system derived from the Lancia Delta Integrale. This coupled with a slippery 0.29-litre drag coefficient made the Q4 a real weapon out on the road and that is exactly what we have here.
This 1994 pre-facelift example has been subject to restoration work in recent years and now features a few choice performance upgrades which a previous owner honed on the legendary Nurburgring.
The History and Paperwork
- Imported from Europe - few being sold in the UK originally
- Restoration work chronicled by a Speed Hunters online article in June of 2020
- A decade of rolling restoration
- Following a trip to the Nurburgring, it was equipped with a few performance upgrades
- Work carried out by Sitech Racing with bodywork by KD Customs
- MOT valid until June, 2023
The Interior
- Left-hand drive
- Recaro seats
- Aftermarket air / fuel ratio gauge and stereo
On the inside, this Alfa Romeo presents really well and we adore the Recaro seats which have aged very gracefully indeed. There is, of course, some wear evident on the bolsters and a few creases to the squabs, although we feel this adds to the car’s character. There is very little wear to the rear seats and the controls such as the steering wheel and gear lever are in good order.
The dashboard and switchgear do not appear to have been affected by UV light and appear free from cracks or bleaching. The instruments are clear and legible, as is the aftermarket air / fuel ratio gauge which was fitted during the restoration process.
The headlining is clean and secure and the black carpeting is quite presentable.
The Exterior
- 17x7 Compomotive wheels
- Apparently red from new
- Bodywork by KD Customs
- ‘Silverstone front splitter’
This Alfa’s bodywork looks really good and the Speed Hunters online article documenting the restoration shows that this car was stripped and repainted by KD Customs. The car needed a little welding to one of the rear quarters but nothing so extensive as many Alfa Romeos of this period.
The vendor informs us that this 155 has always been red and the current finish looks to be really smart. While there is the odd blemish around the car such as on the trim surrounding the grille, the standard of finish is very good and the bodywork appears straight, with good panel alignment and door gaps.
It sits on a set of period Compomotive alloys and we are told that the tyres are in good shape.
The Mechanics
- ‘Stage 3 turbo’
- Electronic boost control setup with wide-band sensor
- Refitted factory airbox to reduce heat-soak
- EVO Cars remap
Following an initial trip to the Nurburgring which resulted in a blown turbo, the vendor concluded that a few performance modifications would bring the best out of this Alfa Romeo.
The turbo was replaced with a ‘stage 3’ performance item and the car was subject to an EVO Cars remap. The electronic boost control setup incorporates a wide-band sensor and the vendor refitted the factory air box to reduce heat-soak.
Under the bonnet, everything looks to be clean and tidy and the vendor informs us that it runs and drives well, with ample performance from the turbocharged engine.
Summary
This rare Alfa Romeo is a bonafide road weapon that we’re informed is very exciting to drive.
As a coveted Q4 example, this is a really rare car in the UK and so the opportunity to acquire these pocket rockets seldom arises.
Restored and equipped with a few tasteful and reversible upgrades, this 155 would make a great addition to any driveway…
