THE APPEAL
When TVR unveiled the new Griffith in 1991, the name invoked the British marques early racing heritage with the Griffith Series 200 from 1964. The new model continued the Blackpool outfits love affair with fibreglass, the lightweight body allowing them to cram larger and larger engines under the bonnet.
For this TVR turned to the reliable grunt of the Rover V8, with engine sizes growing through out the 11 year production run from 4.0 litre to the whopping 5.0 litre V8 that powered the range topping Griffith 500. The example on sale here with Car and Classic is a 1993 TVR Griffith 500 that is an eye catching example of the ultimate British muscle car.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- V5C on file
- First registered on 2rd September 1993
- 11 owners from new
- Valid MOT Certificate until 13th June 2024 with the one noted advisory for a crack windscreen already addressed
- The original TVR Owners Handbook shows the car was sold new by The TVR Centre in Hertfordshire
- A selection of invoices are on file which cover the cars maintenance over the years
- Numerous old expired MOT certificates are included in the history file
- The TVR was acquired by the current owner in November 2022 and in that time it has been driven to France. The owner says it made the journey without issue.
- The most recent invoice dated 22nd May 2023 details servicing and other maintenance jobs were carried out at 35,958 miles at a cost of £898.81.
- The TVR has two sets of keys with two fobs for the Thatcham alarm system
THE INTERIOR
- This TVR Griffith 500 has black leather seats with orange stitching which compliments the exterior colour really well. The seats are in very good shape with the only noticeable mark being a drip stain of the drivers bolster.
- It is believed the interior were retrimmed when the car was re-painted in its current colour scheme
- The owner believes that the dashboard was also upgraded at this time with a carbon fibre look and that the clocks and dials were upgraded as well
- The leather door cards are also in nice shape and have the contrasting orange stitching as well
- The owner states that everything on the interior works as it should with the exception of the heater which is missing the wiring
THE EXTERIOR
- The TVR is finished in a fantastic shade of Pearlescent Orange which is a colour that really suits the curves of the Griffith. It is believed the car was original delivered in Dark Green.
- The paint is in very good condition all round and is very eye catching. There are a number of small blemishes on the nose with a chip on the driver side edge near the bonnet. The owner does have some touch up paint from the car and has said they will aim to address the chip prior to sale
- There is some flaking to the black paint on the bonnet vents and the owner is hoping to address this prior to sale as well
- The TVR sits on a set of BBS Split Rim alloys wheels which are in very nice shape and they look really good on the car
- One neat feature of the Griffith is the clever convertible top which pops the centre roof section out with ease. This then stows away in the boot. The roof itself is in nice shape as is the folding rear section and there is no damage to or cracks in the rear screen
- As noted in the current MOT there was a crack in the windscreen and this has now be addressed by fitting of a brand new replacement windscreen
THE MECHANICS
- 5.0 litre V8 engine with 340 BHP making it one of the most powerful Griffith’s ever sold
- 5 Speed Manual Gearbox
- As noted above the TVR was serviced on the 22nd May at 35,958 and it has covered just over 1,000 miles since
- The owner says that the TVR is still on its original chassis and it was inspected and treated at the most recent service. Photos (which are show in the gallery below) were taken during the inspection which show the underside to be in good clean condition
- The TVR has Bilstein suspension all round and the owner confirm its rides very well
- They go on to say that the Griffith 500 drives very well with a tremendous amount of power on tap. We can confirm the V8 sounds amazing, with a satisfying rumble at idle.
- The owner adds that the rear tyres are approximately 10 years old but they were not noted as an advisory during its MOT on 14th June this year and have plenty of thread left, the front tyres however are only a couple of years old
SUMMARY
The 1990s were a high time for TVR with the Blackpool firm releasing some of its most stunning models. It could be argued that the Griffith was peak TVR, combining an attractive exterior with an equally attractive interior. And under the bonnet is the brutish 5.0 litre V8 which delivers incredible power and acceleration thanks to the light weight body and chassis.
It was a sublime combination that came to represent the ultimate British muscle car, one that could go head to head with its European and American rivals. This TVR Griffith 500 has the power to match its summer sun looks and is now ready for some new adventures.
